West returned a heart, De- | AWFUL LOT OF IT, ANYWAY So ae clarer cashed three heart tricks and then played the king of spades, hoping to catch the queen, but the damsel failed to appear. At this point South's chances of making a ninth trick looked very slim, but he did not give up. He led a low diamond to- wards the king, planning to win the trick in dummy and then duck the next diamond in the hope that West would be forced to win the trick. This plan would have succeed- ed if West had played the ten on the first diamond lead, but West was smart enough to sense what was coming and played the queen instead. However, South was not yet entirely out of ammunition when West put up the queen. He won the trick with the king and re- turned a low diamond, still planning to duck the trick if East followed low. But East, who had been doing some thinking of his own while South and West. were conduct- ing their private war, put up the jack of diamonds to prevent West from being saddled with the lead. South was now out of the pic- ture as. a result of the sterling defence. He took the ace of dia- monds and exited with a dia- mond, hoping that a miracle would occur and that West would have to win the trick and return a club. However, this did not mater ialize and South eventually went down one. It was not because he failed to try -- he did every- thing humanly possible to make the contract -- but because he found himself bucking his head against a solid stone wall. Prayer ending YOUR HEALTH | Dear Dr. Molner: I am af- flicted with what I call 'the great American complaint," Hemorrhoids, Is the tendency hereditary? In the families of both my par- ents hemorrhoids and varicose veins have been common. I don't want to have an op- eration and expose myself to the agony after surgery. How- ever, I recently learned of a new (to me) technique from a friend who underwent the sur- gery 10 years ago. She said she had virtually no pain except tenderness for 36 hours. She has had no recurrence and no adverse aftereffects. 4 If the operation is as easy as I have been led to believe, the great American complaint has met its Waterloo. Any information on this new technique would be welcome to those of us who have delayed surgery from fear of pain for Hemorrhoids Seen | "Great Complaint" By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD The technique is not new. It has been used for quite some time. | Having had this operation my- medication, and then he blamed it all on the operation. Your term of "the great American complaint" has justi+ fication. Hemorrhoids probably rank with obesity in frequency of occurrence. Yes, heredity has something to do with weakness of veins and hence contributes to hems orrhoids, but there are other factors that provoke the condi- tion: Constipation, pregnancy, occupations requiring a person to stand in one place a good deal of the time. Dear Dr. Molner: Are spices drying to the blood or harmful if used excessively? Our family likes dishes which contain cin- namon, nutmeg, allspice and mace.--W. W. G, If someone has an ulcer or similar condition, then avoid spices, including the ones you named. For anyone else, usual gi for flavoring are harm- less. ° Note to D.V.C.: Soreness of the breasts jjust before the men- strual period isn't too unusual, The condition isn't serious. Your friend, I would say, probably understated the case somewhat. But she makes up for the thousands of people who have scared the daylights out of a lot of folks like you. I wouldn't call the operation agony; rather, I'd say that for a few days you don't feel like being polite, but that's true of.a lot of opera- tions that we haven't been con- ditioned to fear. Why anybody would put up with hemorrhoids for 30 months, let alone 30 years, instead of having a few quncomfortable days, is beyond me. NOT 30 YEARS AGO 30 years or more.--MRS. H. A. Come to think of it, you had
