29 THE OSHAWA TIMES. Thursday, September 30. 1965 Flowers, Gems Rooted In The Same Meaning Do you ever wear a diamond or other precious gem set in a floral design If so, perhaps without realizing it, you're hark- ening back to the original mean- ing of the word "'gem". A long, long time ago when Latin was the universal lan- guage of the West, the word for "bud" or small flower was "gemma". Maybe because both flowering buds and precious stones are small, beautiful and often used for adornment, the word roots became florally in- tertwined and the word "gem" was developed. In any case, it seems only fitting that throughout much of history, flowers haye inspired some of the most beautiful pre-| cious jewelry ever made. Flor- al jewelry is said to have orig- inated in the Netherlands where everybody was so tulip - con- scious. Single flowers were made first. Then later jewelry was designed in the loosely ar- ranged, French-style bouquet. Jewel flower sprays, especially with upward forms, grew out of the aigrette for the hair which stemmed from the old East In- dian ornament -- the plume in the turban. One of the most fabulous jew- els ever made was a diamond dahlia brooch belonging to Brit- ain's Princess Margaret, known for her preference for floral jewelry. The dazzling dahlia holds a large centre diamond encircled by two rows of round diamonds and two layers of glittering diamond petals. However, one of the most modest floral jewels ever made was one of the most sig-| nificant. This was a tiny dia- mond Victory pin worn by Queen Wilhelmina during World War II. Despite the national promin- ence of the tulip, the boldly bright daisy was the Victory symbol of the Netherlands. | Thousands of buttons depicting) the white-petaled flower with its sunny centre were given out to Netherlands seamen. Queen Wil- helmina wore a tiny, brilliant diamond daisy, just two inches long, and her daughter the then Princess Juliana -- wore one the Size of a quarter. In only one major way has the floral trend reversed itself, but this has been an impor- tant one since it concerns the diamond engagement ring. In the early 19th Century, engage- ment rings were designed with a large centre diamond set in a cluster of smaller diamonds. They were supposed to resem- ble an old-fashioned nosegay. For dress wear, sleekly styl- ed boots in smooth surfaces are now a familiar and elegant sight. Other boots are grained, waxy brushed and glove tex- tures. Shearling (wool-on-leath- er) linings keep outdoor boots hearth-warm during the win- triest weather. If the prospect of another long winter is depressing, cheer up.
