"THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursdey] September 30, 1965 33 'KILLER-RAPIST' (007 To Russ) MOSCOW (Reuters) -- James Bond was denounced here today as an unthinking murderer and rapist who symbolizes Western violence and champions the bourgeois way of life. The fictional secret agent, created by the late lan Flem- ing and famous in books and movies for his way with women and "licence to kill," came under fire in the Soviet Communist party newspaper Pravda. An article written by one of Russia's top commentators, Yuri Zhukov, labelled bond a successor to Nazi war crim- inals Zhukov said he could see no difference between Bond's philosophy and that of a con- centration camp commander. Bond, the article said, was a symbol of civilization which used napalm in Viet Nam and used bombs to drown the voice of conscience. The adveritures of Bond were used as a text book by "those who are being sent to kill in Viet Nam, in the Congo, in the Dominican re- public,"' Zhukov said Every civilization has the hero it deserves and Bond de- fended the interests of the bourgeois ruling classes, the article went on It described Bond as a rac- ist--"a sort of white archan- gel destroying the unpure races."' 'In the nightmare world of Bond, the law is written with the end of a pistol. Rape and scorn for a woman's honor are considered valor and murder an amusing game." Business Outlook All Roses TORONTO (CP)--Canadians are optimistic about business conditions and believe they will be even better 10 years from now, a Canadian Chamber of Commerce survey shows. The survey, conducted among 2,200 Canadians was released today at the chamber's annual meeting Insufficient exports, excessive unemployment, automation and poor administration or planning were thought to be the main factors which might cause bus- iness conditions to deteriorate. Increased exports and devel- opment of natural resources were cited.as the factors most likely to give the economy a shot in the arm Asked about profits, the aver- age of the 2,200 persons sur- veyed thought business made a net profit on sales of 19.3 per cent after taxes. Regionally, estimates varied from a mini- mum of 13.5 per cent in the Prairies to 20.5 per cent in Ontario On the average, it was thought that business should only be making 16.5 per cent PROFIT--2.7 PER CENT Department of national rev enue taxation statistics show that 1960, 1961 and 1962 Cana dian companies made 2.7 per cent after taxes on gross sales or revenue. Those surveyed thought the average tax on profits paid by Canadian business was 23.5 per cent and it was thought it should be slightly less---23 per cent. Department of national rev enue statistics show that in the year 1962, business paid 40.8 per cent tax on profits. Asked how much control gov- ernment should have on bus- iness, most answered that the government should have a great deal of control of care for the aged, but little control of wages. One question on the survey was: Why do many competitive brands often sell for the same price More than half the people thought norma! competitive forces of the free enterprise system were mainly respon- sible, but more than one-third considered the possibility of collusion or deception.
