Astronomer Admits Now He Exred Fred Hoyle, Britain's foremost astronomer, has dropped a aci- entific bombshell today. He says he probably has been wrong for 20 years about the nature of the universe, One of the most brilliant minds in modern astronomy, Hoyle has been the chief pro- ponent of the steady-state the- ory of the universe, This the- ory holds that matter is being created continuously out of en- ergy and the universe has al- ways been much the same as it now is. . By this theory, the creation of new matter caused the uni- verse to expand and the galax- fes -- the island universes of stars--to move away nrom each other. Against this theory, many as- tronomers argue that the uni- verse started with an explosion --the so-called "big bang" the- ony. By their account, this is the reason for the movement of the galaxies away from each other. But many an astronomer sided with Hoyle. In an article in the scientific journal Nature, Hoyle did not go over to the "'big bang" the- ory, He said he now believes the universe probably is in a state of flux, expanding for bil- lions of years, then contracting to what amounts to a dense ball! of matter, then expanding again. Or it may be possible that only parts of the universe are pulsating, including our corner, while other parts remain 'un- changed, the Cambridge astron- omer added. His new ideas are based on recent observations, especially those of quasi stellar radio sources, These faint' and unde- fined but huge "quasars'" are on the edge of the visible uni- verse, He says recent observations point to the theory that the uni- verse was much denser in the past than it now is. If that is the case, the gleady-state the- ory is out. Suspected Killer : Commits Suicide PENETANGUISHENE, Ont. (CP)--Helmut .
