g THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, October 15, 1965 Whitby Steelers Top i Oshat < BY FRANK RATCLIFFE "Oshawa Crushmen played their first game last night, but it was the third period by the time they got around to crush- ing anybody. And, by then, it was too late! - Crushmen bowed 8-5 to Whitby Daxco Steelers in a Junior 'B' exhibition game played at Osh- a@wa Civic Auditorium. At one point early in the third, Whitby held a 7-1 margin. Jim Booth drew first blood for the Crushmen early in the first, when he beat goaltender Ralph Moore on a breakaway goal. The lead was erased a little more than a minute later, however, Don O'Donaghue scor- ing, with Steelers playing a man short. O'Donaghue poked the| puck in, catching Crushmen's| vantage of their scoring oppor- tunities. WHITBY TAKES OVER With two Crushmen in_ the penalty box, Kevin O'Shea wasted no time starting a Whitby attack that broke the game wide open, After just 16 seconds had elapsed, he scored from a scramble on Oshawa goaltender David Gavel. Steelers scored three more before the nine-minute mark. Wayne Cheesman was in front of the net to steer in a slap shot from the right point by Tommy Chalmers, Whitby playing with the odd man advantage. They came back four minutes later, O'Donaghue poking in Bob Menard's rebound for his second counter of the night. Less than a minute later, Gavel 701 c Jr. 'B Team VV ws made a leg save on Tommy Lavender on a penalty shot, and foiled MacMillan, Wayne David- son and Al Quintillian on close in drives. Steelers dominated Oshawa for the enitre period. With five games under their belts, their passing was sharper and their checking tougher, than that of the younger Oshawans. Bob Waddell replaced Gavel in the third, and it took Whitby just 15 seconds to beat him on power play goal, Tommy Lavender doing the honors. -- But from then on it was all Oshawa, as they gradually took over control of the play.
