It will be presented in the MCVI Audi- torium. The production will also be presented Nov. 3 in Cobourg by the Cobourg Opera and Drama Guild, Toronto drama critics have been using superlatives when describing the show. One critic (Ron Evans) called it "a mag- nificent excursion into tomfool- ery... . Because it is such a genuinely rare and fragile piece, it must be handled delicately." He continued: "There is no room here for common grotesqueries of gross caricatures that so often pass for humor; this play must be set with slim grace and elegance. Happily, that's what Director Marigold Chales- worth and her able cast have done." production has been made pos- sible through the perfection of sound - recording techniques to ye highest fidelity ever achiev- ed. Gianni Raimondi, who plays The performance of Rosamond -- Burne's Lady Bracknell was also singled out for special praise. "It is a magnificent dragon in repose," said Mr. Evans. There's not a wasted gesture or inflection in her characteriza- tion, it is a small masterpiece of economy." The setting is surprisingly elaborate for a tour- ing production and the'costumes excellent, especially: the tkird- act outfit that contrives to make Miss Burne look like the Ken- sington Garden pagoda." This production will tour some 40 more Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick centres before it retums to Toronto to play at the Canadian Playérs' home, the Central Library Theatre in Jan- wary. For those who have never seen an opera, there is a chance to start with one of the world's most popular, Puccini's "L Bo- heme"' performed by the great La Scala Opera Company of Milan, Italy. The Warner Bros. film version in technicolor will play the Re- gent Theatre for two days, with one matinee and evening per- formance daily, Oct. 27-28. La Scala is the world's great- est opera house -- for opera buffs, this is a delight not to be missed. The unique thing about this performance is that "You Are There" feeling you will have as you watch. This unique GIANI RAIMONDI role of a poet, and Mirella Freni, a seamstress, were enthusiastic- ally endorsed recently at their debut at the Metropolitan House in New York (playing "La Bo- heme"). The New York Herald Tribune said Miss Feni was irresistible", and "beautiful to look at. She is an actress of simple naturalness and over- whelming intelligence, the re- view continued. She used voice and gesture to create a Mimo of ravisihing feminity and grace. Said the Herald Tribune of Mr. Raimondi: "As Italian ten- ors go, he is a pillar of grace. His voice is a splendid instru- ment, and he has it under fine control.'"' "La Boheme" was. first pro- duced at the Teatro Reggio in Turin, Italy, Feb. 1, 1896, with Arturo Toscanini conducting. It was soon heard in London and New York. Puccini became the first composer to enjoy the full benefits of modern conditions whereby a successful work may bring a fortune to its author in a short time. The film produc- tion was directed by Herbert von Karajan, acclaimed as one of the leading contemporary symphonic and operatic conduc- tors. ee Roz Russell: Golden Age's Final Gleam By sAMES BACON HOLLYWOOD (AP) -- In the golden era, the Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer lot was bedazzled by such stars as Jean Harlow, Norma Shearer, Myrna Loy, Hedy Lamarr, Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell. Only one is left--Roz Russell, swinging wilder than ever. She has survived Hollywood crises like a studis boss's nephew. What's her secret? "IT count the money and never take myself seriously,' says Roz. "I only take my work se- riously." At the moment, she is the mom of Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad. Next she plays the role of a mother superior in The Trouble With Angels. Roz freely admits she was born in 1912, although she doesn't look it. "I have never been afraid of age--or playing aged character parts," she says. 'I have al ways welcomed character roles. Maybe that's because I'm such a character myself. I did Craig's Wife when I was 23--and she: was a middle-aged woman. "T have been told that I have abnormal energy. When I was a child in Waterbury, Conn., my mother would complain that I was loud, but my father would counter that I was the only on he could understand at the din- ner table. "Mother was right. I am loud -- maybe because I was named for a steamship my folks ROSS RUSSELL Continued on Page 6 Karajan's disciplinary hand is much evident at La Scala, in Milan, where he produces as well as conducts.
