Antique Engines: Collector' s Item Here By CHhis DENNETS Of The Oshawa Times Staff Collectors are a strange breed of people. They will travel any distance, fight the heaviest of odds and. pay any price to win a long lost item that has been buried in someone's attic for 50 years or more. Even stranger than _ their habits are the things they col- lect. There are people in this world, for example, who col- lect antique road signs, old Humphrey Bogart movie post- ers; even Chinese junks. But perhaps the strangest collection of all is to be found right here in Oshawa. For the last 10 years Bob Stuart, of Grierson st., has been travelling an average of 40,000 miles a year collecting antique airplane engines. He has been so skilled and successful at the job that he now has one of the finest privately-owned collections in North America. AIRSHIP ENGINE The latest and proudest addi- tion to the collection, which now numbers over 30 engines, is one of the only two remaining Zeppelin airship engines on this side of the Atlantic. Like 'most. of Mr. _ Stuart's other finds, he stumbled across the engine quite by accident. "It was a chance in a mil- lion,' explained Mr. Stuart with obvious relish. "I was down in the States at a club fly-in. I ran into a friend who tipped me off that the Chicago Science Museum had a Zeppelin engine for sale. 'He offered to-do the negotiat- ing for me and within a couple of weeks it was mine at a bar- gain price of $200." As a collector's item the engine is a stupendous catch for Mr. Stuart. The 400 horsepower, 12-cylin- - der monster, made by the Ger- man Maybach company, was one of five that powered the famous "Los Angeles" Zeppelin across the Atlantic in 1924. The airship was built by the German Zeppelin. works in Friedrichshafen and handed over to the Americans as part of the reparation agreement after the First World War. BOB STUART takes a look at a 1916 Hisso Engine made by the famous Spanish factory of Hispano Suiza. The huge V8 It was the second airship to make an Atlantic crossing. It took 77 hours to cross from Germany to New York. + In service with the American Navy the "Los Angeles" was frequently seen over Canada. Mr. Stuart has seen _ photo- graphs of the airship over Niagara Falls. IN SHOW CONDITION After Mr. Stuart had carried the engine back to his home in the back of a borrowed truck, he set to and stipped the. whole thing down and cleaned ard primed the outside. In show condition, it now rests in a hangar at Oshawa Airport. This, unfortunately, is one of Bob Stuart's big problems. He pumped out a large 150 horse- power and was a revolutionary engine for its day. (Times Photo) has no where to exhibit his engines. He and his partner John Carnwith, of the T. J. Gale company, are looking forward to being able to finance an aero museum here in the city. The collection at present is stored in two locations. Half is at the Oshawa Airport and half at the business of T. J. Gale. NEW MUSEUM "Tt would like them to be put on exhibition right here in Oshawa," Mr. Stuart said. '"'The city has a long and colorful aviation history and there are museum." em mone neanti« fa the eves bs Seas pe paw ee a ER CA Wr aw are interested in flying. "The city has a_ motor museum -- why not an aero It is to this end that Mr. Stuart and Mr. Carnwith are working. **A lot of people have given Me engines and aviation items," he added. "I. feel obligated to work for a museum on their behalf.' In his search for new items to add to the ever growing col- lection Mr. Stuart spends most ef his weekends away from home. "TI travel about 40,000 miles a year looking for bits -and pieces," he said. "A lot of my time is wasted too. Only about one in 10 tip-offs works out." Over the years he has built up a very efficient underground intelligence system. Travelling as he does all over Canada, and the States, he meets all kinds of other collec- tors. 'And we work as a team," said Mr. Stuart. "One day I will get a tip from an antique car collector. He knows that I might be able to return the favor sometime. "You run into all kinds of interesting people in. this line, We have to help each other, otherwise we would never get anywhere."' Mr. Stuart's collection, which is worth thousands of dollars, includes some very interesting pieces. Pride of the collection, and the ollest item, is an OX5 which was made way back in 1915 and powered the famous Curtis "Jenny'"' aircraft. It is one of only two in Canada. Mr. Stuart found it in a saw mill at Barrie's Bay. The owner didn't really know what it was and Mr. Stuart got it for a bar- gain price. Also in the collection is a Spanish Hisso engine, a Model 'A' Ford engine that at one time in its life powered a light aircraft, an Armstrong Sid- deley Sevette, a Cirrus engine that came out of one of the early Moths and many others. -- WEEK'S ACTIVITIES ot the AUDITORIUM OCTOBER 24th -- OCTOBER 30th SUNDAY -- OCTOBER 24th THURSDAY -- OCT. 28th e@ 10 A.M, - 1:00 P.M. -- Open- ing UAWA Hockey League @ 1:30 - 3:30 P.M. -- Family Skating @ 4:00 - 11:00 P.M. -- Ice Rent- ols MONDAY -- OCTOBER 25th @ 6:00 - 8:30 P.M. -- GM Office Hockey League e@ 8:30 - 10:30 P.M. -- Minor Hockey Leegue -- Oshewe TUESDAY -- OCTOBER 26th e@ 8:30 P.M. -- CARL SMITH of Country Music Holl with FARON YOUNG and his Deputies, RED SOVINE, BLAKE EMMONS, DIANA LEIGH and THE STONEY MOUN- TAIN CLOGGERS WEDNESDAY -- OCT. 27th @ 6:00 - 10:00 P.M. -- Oshewe Figure Skating Club FRIDAY -- OCTOBER 29th e@ 6:00 - 7:00 P.M. -- Little NHL Tyke Hockey @ 8:00 P.M. -- Junior "B" Hec- key . . .
