Oct. 26 with Carl Smith . and his Country Music Hall at the Osh- awa Civic Auditorium. Other. stars in the colorful attraction will be Diana Lee, Blake Emmons and the Stoney Mountain Cloggers, a famous square dance team reared in the true folk dance tradition of the great Smokey Mountains. Faron Young and His Deputies are also starred. It is "Red" Sovine's ability to control his voice and put feeling into a song that puts him in a class reserved for the best. He started show business in his native Charleston, West Virginia. He got his first job with Jim Pike and the Carolina Tar Heels and was featured in the band on the Friday night "Old Farm Hour Show at sta- tion WCHS. Soon the band moved to WWVA in Wheeling where "Red' and the band were featured in the world famous Saturday night "'WWVA Wheeling Jamboree." In 1947 "Red" formed his own band, "The Echo Valley Boys."' They appeared regularly on Radio Station KWKH in Shreve- port, La. In June, 1949, "Red" got an important break. The im- mortal "Hank" Williams left the Louisiana Hayride in Shreve- port to become a regular on the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. "Red" took ever "Hank's" place on the Hayride where he starred for five years. In 1954 "Red"? became a regular star on "The Grand Ole Opry"'. Faron Young is but 5' 8' tall, but he stands tall in show busi- ness. After a decade as one of Country Music's top talents, "The Young Sheriff," as fellow tradesmen call him, crams as much activity into 24 hours as the law and physical endurance allow. Faron was singing on_ the Louisiana Hayride in 1951 when Capitol records signed him to an exclusive contract. He soon had his first hit, 'Tattle Tale Tears." He joined a U.S. Army talent show on ABC-TV in 1952. He toured the world with his own show entertaining troops, He writes many of his own songs. He was starred in sey- eral Western films, co-starred with Bruce Bennet in 'Daniel Boone" and with Ferlin Husky and Zsa Zsa Gabor in 'Country Music Holiday" in 1958. He makes about 15 personal ap- Ppearances monthly and has been a regular on Grand Ole Opry since 1952. He spends his Spare-time with his wife, Hilda, ON THE and three sons, at their spaci- ous ranch-style home - near Nashville. The Spruce Villa in Whitby has been featuring "The Kings Four,' formerly known as_ the Neil Jackson Quartet. Two of the big hits are Dan Van on; the accordion, 4 solid favorite with patrons, and Leo Debono, the red-hot drummer. Mcmo to Opera Levers: The Regent Theatre will present the Warner Bros. Technicolor pro- duction of the famed La Scala Opera Company in "La Boheme" for two days next week (October 27-28). There will be but four presentations, two matinees and two evening per- formances. The Warner Bros. presenta- tion has been made possible through the perfection of sound- recording techniques to the highest fidelity ever achieved. Utilizing newly-developed sound equipment, as well as the tech- nical services of Europe's lead- ing audio engineers, the com- plete musical range of "La Boheme" has been captured on film for the first time. The film itself is superb quality Tech- nicolor, providing an exact pho- tographic reproduction of the brilliant La Scala performance. The cast of singers is head- ed by Gianni Raimondi, Mirella Freni, Adriana Martino, Rolan- do Panerail, Gianni Maffeo, Ivo Vinco, Carlo Badioli and Fran- co Riccardi. This is the story of Luigi Illica and Giuseppi Gia- cosa. It is based on the novel, "Scenes de la Lie de Boheme," by Henri Murger. The opera is in four acts. The Whitby Hotel's Stage Door Lounge will again feature the --Ellis-- McLintock Quartet, featuring "Billy" Kay for one week starting on Monday. The group already is solidly established with Stage Door fans as a solid hit. Mr. McLintock is one of Can- ada's best known musicians. He has won 37 medals in competi- tion throughout the world and received a -citation from -- the late President Kennedy for his work with the United Nations. He is regarded as one of the better trumpet players in Cana- dian show business and his per- sonal appearances throughout the week shouldn't be missed. Mr. Kay has been associated with Mr. McLintock for several ee years and has appeared on radio and television many times during his six years with sev- eral of the name bands through- out the United States and Can- ada. The quartet is featuring comedy and music in the mod- ern manner. The Gold Rush Lounge at the Central Hotel, 9 King street west, Oshawa, will again have "The Crosswinds" as its fea- ture attraction next week. This group features John Lemme on the organ pith Carol Craig as an added attraction. Miss Craig was the runner-up in the Miss Canada Contest two years ago.
