G THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursdey, October 26, 1968 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR PETERBOROUGH hockey teams pay a couple of non- social but strictly competitive visits, to our fair city this week. Tomorrow night at the Civic Auditorium, Oshawa "Crushmen" will host the Don Bye Junior "B" Club, from the Liftlock City, in their first meeting of the season. Coming from behind to earn that 5-5 tie in Kingston last Sunday, the Oshawa lads made it evident they are going to be a factor in the Lakeshore Junior "B'" group -- which was won by the Limestone City squad last year -- and they went to the OHA semi-finals. The "Crushmen" are, like their "big brothers", the Generals, still undefeated and they hope to extend that record here tomorrow night, just as our Gen- LPN on Ree Blue handed Calgary Stampeders their first shutout in nine years, a 22-0 defeat before a sell-out Western F 0 0t ball Conference crowd of 22,266. Meangvhile, getting back to the big Junior "B" attraction here tomorrow night, the young hockey fans, those of 12 years of age, or under, will rejoice to know that, just like last week, they'll be admitted to the game Friday night, free of charge, as long as they are accompanied by an adult, And they'll be talking 'Dad' or some adult into taking them to the game, because there'll also be a free drink waiting for them inside. In addition, they're running a draw on Friday night, for 25 prizes -- tickets to the Generals' game on Saturday night. PORT PERRY Legion members and "the Town Fathers" honored the Port Perry Legion 'Squirts' Softball Club, on Tuesday night, with a gala banquet and presentation ceremonies, Under the able guidance of coach "Vinny" Walker, the Port Perry Youngsters captured the All-Ontario OASA Championship this summer. The Town of Port Perry presented each of the proud youngsters with an individual trophy while the Legion gave. each boy a handsome jacket, bearing the club emblem and the OASA Championship crest. In winning The Lauria Trophy, Port Perry ended Galt's two-year reign as Ontario Squirt champs. Too much credit for Port Perry's great progress as a strong softball centre in minor ranks, can not be given to "Vinny" Walker, now an OASA representative for that area. An ex- Oshawan, "Vinny" was a tower of strength in organizing and operating Pee Wee teams in the Storie Park area, for many years, prior to moving out to Port Perry, a few years ago. Today, some of the players who started as pint-sized performers under "Vinny" Walker's guidance, are playing for Oshawa's top adult teams, including the Senior "A" Tony's. The young boys of Port Perry are lucky to have a citizen like "Vinny"' Walker in their midst and we under- stand that the members of the Legion and veteran ball stars such as Bill Harper, are all "'pitching in" to round out a great set-up, Congratulations "'Port"! BRIGHT BITS -- Winnipeg's smashing 22-0 victory last night, right in Calgary, has stunned the Western football folk. "Bud" Grant's Blue Bombers are now tied for first place and Stampeders have to win their last game, against B.C. Lions, if they are to finish on top. Calgary hasn't been blanked since 1956 (by Sask. Roughriders). Winnipeg has completed their schedule ... TORONTO LEAFS eked out a 2-1 win in Boston last night, but the Bruins made Terry Sawchuk perform miracles in the third period, to get Leafs their first win. Canadiens nipped Rangers 4-3, in a fast game ... ANGELO MOSCA has declined to pick his own "All-Star Team of Meanies' -- which he did last year. Those "star" selections have too many sharp points, no doubt! ... WALES pulled a major soccer upset, at Cardiff, last night, defeating Russia 2-1 in the final match of group qualifications.
