It ends after next Tuesday. Undisputed as one of the world's most beautiful and tal- ented actresses, Academy- Award winner Loren is again united with the team of actor Marcello Mastroianni, director Vittoria De Sica and producer Carlo Ponti. Miss Loren was recently star- red with Mastrioanni in "Yesterday, Today and Tomor- row."' The story is based on the celebrated Italian stage play, "Filomena Marturano"' and Miss Loren is only the second actress to play the demanding female lead. She considers it to be one of her most challenging Sophia Loren's acceptance as an actress of high -dramatic skill did not come easily or quickly. Outgrowing the plain- ness of her earlier years, she has had to surmount the old belief that a beautiful woman rarely makes a fine actress, for her beauty has become almost legendary and her face and figure the most publicized in the world. Born in the town of Poz- zouli on the outskirts of Naples, Sophia grew up on_ spaghetti and hand-me-down clothes. The Regent Theatre will play "Zorba The Greek," with An- thony Quinn Noy. 10-16th. in- clusive. This is the film ver- sion of a famous novel by Nikos Kazantzakis. It was pro- duced and directed by Michael Cacoyannis from his screenplay and filmed on location in the Island of Crete, actual setting ofthe novel. This is the story of a young British writer (Alan Bates) who journeys to Crete to take charge of a lignite mine be- queathed him by his Greek father. In the course of his travels, he teams up with Zorba, a grizzled old Greek ruffian with a keen sense of adventure and romance. The film re- counts the escapades of the ribald Zorba and his youthful, intellectual companion and em- ployer as they try to revitalize the. mine. "Zorba" offers the kind of robust part for which Anthony Quinn is famous. To make the- film, Quinn journeyed to Greece for the second time, the first being for his role in "The Guns of Navarone." Alan Bates today is ranked with Peter O'Toole, Albert Finney and Tom Cour- tenay as one of England's out- standing young actors. Irene Papas plays the beauti- ful and withdrawn widow -- she is fresh from her success as the star of "Electra." Quinn plays Alexis, Zorba, a 65-year-old giant with the zest- ful appetites of a 20-year-old and the wisdom of a man whose eyes have witnessed a world of pain and suffering. His exuber- ant spirit remains untouched and infects all with whom he comes in contact. Quinn believes in thorough preparations for each part. For BILLY WALKER "Zorba," he travelled through small Cretan villages, sitting in cafes and observing people, joining in Greek dances and celebrations. This kind of per- fectionism has made him one of the world's most respected actors,;--as-well_.as_one ofthe most professional. Quinn's most successful role was in Federico Fellini's '"'La Strada," which won awards. as a film and honors for the actor. Said Quinn recently: 'Acting has never been a matter of compe- tition for me, I am only com- peting with myself." The Plaza Theatre will hold over '"'What's New Pussycat?"', until after next Tuesday night. It will be William Wyler's Columbia Pictures presenta- tion of "The Collector', based on the suspenseful best-seller written by John Fowles. The picture was filmed in Techni- color. In both subject matter and treatment, it is regarded by critics as a truly unique un- dertaking for the screen. Wyler has won three Academy Awards -- for "Mrs. Miniver" -- "The Best Years of Our Lives' -- "Ben Hur". He has also been nominated by 10 oth- ers, For their performances in "The Collector'? Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggar won the "best actor' and "'best actress" awards at the Cannes Film Fes- tival. Nor are Wyler and his young principals alone in the applause being won by the pro- duction. Stanley Mann and John Kohn, who penned the screen- play, adhere close to. Fowles' best-selling tale, translating its shock and terror and conflict into pictorial terms with a fid- elity that is a tribute. to the original. And Jud Kinberg and Kohn served as co-producers, brilliantly bringing together some of the best of American and British behind - the- scene technicians to give William Wy- ler and the film a richness and smoothness that adds to the new drama, Terence 'Stamp, who stars with Samantha Eggar in the film wwon't take a role unless he feels right for it. Yet hundreds of actors accept a role they know isn't right for them be- cause of. one thing -- money. Stamp has nothing against money, but money, in his book, is not enough for the services he renders in stage or film roles in which he believes. He wants these roles to be. helpful to him in more important other ways. "I think money is _ beautiful," he says," "but I'm still a young man -- there's plenty of time for money. Before I reach the stage, where money starts roll- ing in, if ever, I have a lot to learn about acting." Stamp plays the unforgettable role of Freddie Clegg, a young bank clerk who is hard to classi- fy even in words. He is prudish, dull insignificant, and a butter- fly collector who wins money in a football pool. The screen comes alive with the performance of Stamp and Miss Eggar. Their mastery of difficult roles is eloquently brought out by Wyler's sensi- tive, understanding and persua- sive direction. The Hotel: Lancaster will fea- ture the Dave Todd Trio next week starting Monday night. The group plays the Country- Western type of music with guitars and drums and is com- posed of two men and a girl. They have made several records lately with the London Record- ing Company.
