WHITBY DAY - BY - DAY Meeting Will Discuss Small Animal Shelter WHITBY (Staff) -- The chair- man of firelight and community services Councillor Harry Ink: pen was advised by resolution of town council, to call a meet- ing between southern Ontario * County ee for en purpose of discussing a sma animal shelter. The question arose following the discussion of a request by the Whitby Branch of the On- tario Humane Society for the town to participate in the oper- ation of the shelter, If approved, the shelter could possibly be located on Hopkins st., in the town of Whitby. The shelter| would be a one-storey building including office, reception room and quarters for the supervisor. The proposed shelter would provide adequate area for 'runs' and a pleasant small park for visitors. The property aforemen- tioned, however, was described as ideal in the report with one exception. Smoke from a near- by smelter might make the location undesirable, Further investigations for a suitable spy be get othe ipa Bip mt site are continuing. If approved, the town would have a 'smal animal shelter' which would have a supervisor on duty equipped with a truck, The town, however, would still have to pick up the dogs or other animals in town and de- liver them to the shelter. Councillor Harry Inkpen agreed the motion by Deputy Reeve Brooks was a good one and could possibly produce something to the advantage of the community. : Councillor Attersley suggested ie was interested in investiga- tion of any project which could decrease the costs of dog con- trol to the ratepayers. He said, however, he had several calls from people who had dogs pick- ed up by the dog control offi- cer, "These people could find) nothing wrong with our present) dog control officer," he said. | Councillor Bevan To Retire WHITBY (Staff) -- Whitby Councillor George Bevan will not stand for re-election at the forthcoming municipal election|troduced to council four years in the community, he announced Monday night. Councillor Bevan comments, from a prepared address to council, were: "Tt is with mixed feelings that I announce that in the forthcoming election for coun- cil I will not be standing for re-election. "Serving on council for the past four years has not only been a great honor but a chal- lenge and a priceless exper- fence. I have tried to do my best at all times, and hope I have succeeded in making a worthwhile contribution to our municipality. A few of the things I had the pleasure of in- troducing to council were the Organization Study by Manage- ment Consultants, the setting up of a Co-ordinating Committee for Public Services on Streets, Streamlining the handling of council correspondence and the need for a Community Chest.
