Newsweek Magazine hailed this picture "a thinking man's 'Goldfinger', funnier by far than any of the Bond pictures and more rewarding, too". The Saturday Review said of the film: "It is the very model of suspense entertainment, styl- ishly directed, wittily written, played with immaculate timing" and the New York Times called it: "As classy a spy film as you would care to see', The film's director, Sidney J. Furie, is young by any stand. ards to be a feature director. In fact he directed big films when he was in his 20's. The Central Hotel's Gold Rush Lounge on King st. west, Oshawa, has a novelty act com- ing in for next week starting Monday. It's the Phillips Brothers, who have a repertoire consisting of more than 300 songs in two-part harmony. They sing in five lan- guages; Italian, Yiddish, Span- ish, Greek and German, all of which augurs well for some top entertainment for the lounge next week. The group was featured sev- eral times at the Colonial Sup- per Club, Toronto. They have also played such niteries as the San Su San, Mineola, Long Island, N.Y.; the Gilden Slip- per, Glencove, Long Island: and the Town and Country, Brook- lyn, N.Y. The Hotel Genosha's down- stair sroom known as Harry's Hideaway has "The Bradfords" backagain next week (their third in a row) io piease patrons with their unique type of rock n' roll. The troupe is from Bradford, England, has held the service record now for the Hide- away. Their first engagement-- fer two weeks -- was last Janu- ary and they have returned twiee since. There is no telling how long the current visit will be extended. The Genosha's other. lounge, the Starlite Room, continues to long: : do brisk business with the famous honky-tonk team of Georgina and Jimmy, who play- ed five consecutive years at Toronto's Brown Derby res taurant, As a testimonial to their drawing power and durability in Toronto, they have many vis- itors each week here from the Queen City, patrons who make the trip especially to see and hear them. Georgina still ranks with the best when it comes to putting a song over and Jimmy is certainly one of the most versatile performers to ever sit at>the keyboard of a_ honky- tonk piano. The team has now become a Genosha institution, thanks to their fine performances and varied repertoire which is always good for return busi- ness. The Saints, those zany expo- nents of Dixieland jazz who perform under sponsorship of the Oshawa Kinsmen Club, made one of their rare appear- ances recently. They were the guests of the Golden Age Club of Simcoe Hall, which group also has its own orchestra. To get back to The Saints, who have never received the plaudits locally they so richly deserve, they are performing with more skill and verve than ever before. Whether or not they are avail- able for engagements, city or- ganizations, such as_ service clubs, would be well rewarded if they could induce them to perform at a dinner-meeting or social. Founded 11 years ago by two (Bruce Gerrow, saxaphone and Gordon Garrison, clarinet). The Saints are not musical profes- sionals in the pure sense of the word. They perform for the sheer joy of it (and also for the pleasure of scores of others fortunate enough to hear them play). There were some "surprise" appearances on The_ Saints' roster when they turned up at Simcoe Hall for their recent performance. Dr. C. C. Stewart, City MOH, played saxaphone, "Billy"? Miller shared the piano assignment with "Bob" Taylor, a veteran member of the organ- ization. If there is a better jazz pianist in Oshawa and district than Miller, his identity is un- known officially. There were also such stal- wart performers as Ron Poul- ter, on zylophones, "Monty" Cranfield on banjo; and "Bob" Taylor, whose names have been synonomous with The Saints throughout the years. There is only one serious de- fect with The Saints, as has been said in print previously -- they appear far too infrequent- ly. Members of the Oshawa Little Theatre these days are busy at work rehearsing for their newest production, Jean Anoulh's "The Lark,'"' a roman- tic and touching study of the French historical heroine, Joan of Arc. It is to be presented in the theatre of the McLaughlin Pub- lic Library on the week be- ginning Nov. 22 (the play has had a run of 13 consecutive years at the Ambassador The- atre in London's West End). The Oshawa Little Theatre has assembled one of its finest casts for this production, which is to be under the per- sonal direction of Harry Chap- man (who needs no introduction to drama fans in Oshawa and district). This play presents a _ real challenge for the OLT because it has eight scenes entailing a great deal of quick- scene changes. It is one of the most ambitious drama _ undertakings locally since the OLT presented Christopher Fry's "Murder in the Cathedral' (the play in which Dr. Claude Vipond play- ed an unforgettable roie). Maureen Langridge will play the role of Joan of Arc; in supporting roles will be Rex Williams, as Warwick, and Gwyn Roberts, as. Cauchon. Tne Oshawa Li Theatre has had an impressive list of productions since it first opened shop in the early 1940's -- "The Lark" promises to live up to this fine tradition. Today the group boasts a membership of more than 250 including five highly - experienced directors, plus several highly competent actors and actresses. The group usually manages to break even on these produc- tions-- with 'The Lark," it should go over the top and into the black, GAS RANGE This fine gas range wos made to Superior's exacting speci- fications by Canada's top range monufacturer -- Enterprise Foundry Compony Limited, /@ A_ beautifully designed clock that keeps time accur- ately.
