The Nutcracker will take up the last half of the 90- minute program. Prior to in- termission viewers will © see **Solitaire,'"? a new addition to the company's repertoire; the short pas de deux "Clair de Lune," and 'One in Five,' described as a plotless ballet with a surprise ending. The National Ballet has as its artistic director Celia Franea. The company open- ed its six-month tour last Sat- urday in Montreal. Ontario and Quebec centres make up most of the itinerary. Some United States cities and Mexi- co City are also included. The company has 60 dancers plus its own 25-member orchestra, PRIMA BALLERINA Lois Smith, prima rina, and premier balle- danseur Ear! Kraul will appear in the productions here. Angela Leigh and Jeremy Blanton will dance in "One in Five.". The National Ballet is one of the few companies to use the full score of The Nut- cracker. The ballet has been reworked -- restaged with new choreography added for this tour by Celia Franca. This new $100,000 produc- tion was first seen last Christ- mas at Toronto's O'Keefe Centre. The dancers' vibrant costumes are complemented by specially commissioned sets designed by Jurgen Rose. Act II of The Nutcracker takes the ballet's child hero- ine Clara into the magic Kingdom of Sweets where she is entertained by a series of lively character dances and greeted by the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy. Oshawa A basic aim is to break down Canada's regionalism by ac- quainting the new generation with the diversity and allure of the country's geography, so- ciety and culture. Next summer the program will put another 15,000 young people on the road and the same number will be travel- ling in 1967, the 100th anniver- sary of Confederation. Valerie joined the commis- sion last January and her co- hort, Peter Mandia, 22, arrived in May. The 3,000 kids they were di- rectly responsible for this year made at least 350 group-moves by rail, and Valerie and Peter had to decide where they should go, how they would get there, and make sure they had rail tickets, were well fed and saw something.
