A. M Your question is harder to answer than you might think. In your particular locality I don't know of such a clinic, probably within some hundreds of miles, This doesn't mean, hevrever, that there aren't cap- able physicians where you live. Generally speaking, arthritis research clinics are in the larger cities and medical cen- tres, but they do not accept all arthritis. patients. They can't. There aren't enough clinics. and there are too many patients. Finn see you'll find that theySaccept patients for whom they omy do the most good, and this automatically means a preference for younger ones, Say under 40 or so This does not imply that Too Many Patients For Arthritis Clinics _ By JOSEPH G, MOLNER, MD older people can't be helped. They can. But the younger ones are those who have acquired active arthritic diseases (it isn't just one disease, you know) and their joints have not deteriorated from sheer wear- ing down, It is from these pa- tients that we are likely to find out the most useful ways .of treating arthritis. Local chapters of the arthritis foundation scattered around the country are an excellent source of information on what research is in progress and what clinics (if any) are available in a given area, va A significant effort is being |made, through the foundation, to provide fellowships for phy- sicians to study arthritis inten- sively with the idea of having them establish clinics, or at any rate provide more care, in smaller and medium-size cities. JAY BECKER What would you bid now with each of the following four hands? : 1, Spades A-K-Q-J-6-3; hearts Q-7-2; diamonds J-5; clubs 8-3. 2, Spaces Q-J-9-7-6-2; hearts K; diamonds A-9-5; clubs A-7-2. . 3. Spades K-Q-9-6-5-3; hearts K-J; diamonds 7; clubs Q-9-6-3. 4, Spades A-K-J-8-7-4-2; hearts 9-3; diamonds 6-2; clubs A-4. 1. Pass North has had twe opportunities to raise spades and both times refused to do so. There is consequently no reason to assume that it be easier to make ten tricks in spades than nine tricks in no- trump. We have six solid tricks to contribute in notrump and it fs not too much to expect partner to provide three more. Further- more, the queen of hearts and jack of diamonds may each help to provide a stopper in the red suits. 2. Four clubs, North has cer- tainly been unenthusiastic to date, judging from his minimum rebids, but there is still a pos- sibility of making a slam. It is true that North would probably make three notrump if we elected to pass, but we would be remiss in our obligations if we did. After all, partner has no idea at this point that our hand can support clubs. All we have done so far is bid spades. A club raise might be just enough to stir his interest in a slam, and partner is entitled to learn that in addition to spade length we have club support. He would al- most surely start to think in terms of a slam if his hand consisted of: Spades 4; hearts A-9-3; dia- monds K-Q-7; clubs K-Q-10-8-5-2, 3. Four clubs. The jump to three spades was based on the assumption of a game in either spades or clubs, and not on the expectation of 26 high-card points in the combined hands. It would be prrong to commit the contract to three notrump by passing, or to bid four spades without revealing the club sup- port. With only 11 high - card points and 6-4-2-1 distribution, the best chance for game lies in a euit contract. 4. Four spades. Here the spades are not solid for no- trump purposes, as in Hand No. 1 above, and it is therefore inadvisable to pass. We can probably make four spades even if a trump trick must be lost, but three notrump might easily fail if the spade suit could not be run immediately. At notrump, the opponents can probably set up a long suit on the opening lead and cash it before the spades could be run. This danger is avoided if spades are trump. Let there be no doubt about it: Treatment of arthritis is not something that can be learned entirely from a book or a school. There is too much about it that nobody yet knows. But intensive effort is being made to find out more. The arthritis foundation will invest $2,000,000 in such research in the coming year, and that is only part of the total. One of our nine national. institutes of health, the National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolis Dis- eases, at Bethesda, supports ing and treating arthritis, but there is need for more, and ef- forts are in progress to fill some of that need. Dear Dr. Molner: We have a retarded child who at the age rof three can't walk or talk or eat solid foods. Can you tell me where to write to find out about schools for retarded children? --Mrs. M. W. In your case,.you both have) state and city associations for retarded children which you will find in the phone book. In other localities, there are vari- ous ways to get in touch with the proper people.
