Marlene Herbst is the 16-year- old Ajax High School student who designed and painted a 20-| foot mural on the third floor of the hospital at the age of 14. Marlene designed the mural as part of a Grade 9 school art project under her art teacher, I.~Black, who thought so well of her mural composition that he presented her miniature "His- tory of Medicine" to the hospi- tal architect, E. Zeidler. Mr. Zeidler approached the hospital board and recommend- ed that the mural be executed on the south wall of the third floor. FRIENDS HELPED With the aid of two friends, Stuart Cameron of Peterborough and Skippy Cope of Ajax, young Miss Herbst worked the entire summer of 1964 transferring her miniature painting onto the south wall. Marlene who has resided in Ajax for the past eight years first became interested in paint- ing at St. Andrew's Public School where Mrs. T. Holliday was her art teacher in Grade 7. Marlene was born in Berlin, Germany, and came to Canada with her parents at the age of two. She retained her mother tongue and still reads and writes in German.
