Safety Work Cuts Costs Car Insurance -- Official MONTREAL -- Effective traf- fic safety work can heip stem | the rising cost of automobile in- | surance, James Matsen, Presi- | dent of. All-Canada. Insurance Federation, told the Insurance| Institute of Quebec. _ Mr. Matson, quoting from the | Green Book, an annual collec: | tion of automobile insurance | statistics, said that insurance | claims frequency in the prov- | ince of Quebec had dropped by | about 344 per cent over the | past year. | "T feel this is directly attribut- | able to the fine safety work | which Madame _ Kirland-Cas- | grain (Quebec's transportation | minister) has been responsible, for," said Mr. Matson. Mr. Maison said that the Green Book, which is used by most-insurance.companies as a basis fer establishing automo- bile insurance rates, shows that different sections of Canada re- act + differently during any given year. In British Columbia, he point- ed out, the averdge- claim cost increased sharply last year while claim frequency stayed reasonably steady. In Alberta, on the other hand, the average cost of claim went down slight- ly and frequently increased sharply ... up 10 per cent in the province as a whole and 13 per cent in Calgary. In Manitoba, average cost and frequency both increased with Brandon showing a 57. per cent increase in costs . . . the highest increase in Canada. Both claims frequency and |the average cost of claim in- creased in Ontario last year, he said with the highest. increases in. northern and northwestern Ontario and in the southern On- tarie cities of Brantford Niagara Falls.
