By Geo. H. Campbell: SPORTS EDITOR OSHAWA GENERALS came through in fine fashion, chalking up a clean-cut win last night in London, to make it a six-point weekend. Starting off with that win over Niagara Falls Flyers on Friday night, the Oshawa boys have boosted their point-total.by a full half-dozen counters, as they added back-to-back wins over the London Nationals. Now, just in case somebody should get real technical with you, as an over-avid Oshawa.Generals hockey booster, we would point out the warning -- Oshawa Generals are really only leading the OHA Junior "A" race because they've played more games (and won more) than the other teams in the circuit. But it's the fact that Generals have played more games, that has them in the lead. This is a key point, that should never be ignored, THE BASIC RULE in studying out a team's proper standing in any league race -- and this we have pointed out many times -- is the 'Loss' column, Never mind how many games have been played -- that's the second most- important. The number of games won really isn't important at all and that "'total points' is only a temporary guide for the guy that's making up the Standings, The real informa- tion column is that list of "'Losses". If you want to get the true picture, just check the OHA Junior "A" League stand- ings today. Thanks to last night's win right in London, the Oshawa Generals have a total of 32 points and on the face of it, that shows as five points ahead of Niagara Falls and six points ahead of Peterborough. But technically, the Gen- erals are really only one point ahead of the Flyers and the "Petes" are almost as good as tied with Oshawa, for first place ACTUALLY, each team has lost five games while Flyers/ have had five tied scores, with Oshawa and Peterborough having had four draws. But in the loss column, they are all even. Now if Niagara Falls Flyers win those two games they have "in hand'? -- they'll have a total of 31 points -- only one point behind the Generals. But Peterborough has three games more to play than Oshawa and if they win all three -- then they'll have a total of 32 points -- exactly tied with the Generals for top spot. in the standing. So, the true official standing can not be 'determined until every team has played out its full list of schedule dates. Bit in the meantime, if you want the proper perspective -- check the "'Loss" column -- it means a lot more than the "Wins'"' or even the point totals, Meanwhile, both Flyers and 'Petes' can catch up one game this week, since the Generals are idle until this Saturday night, when the red-hot "Petes" visit our Civic Auditoriuni. Prior to that, '"'Petes" are at home to St. Kitts on Thursday night and Hamilton visits Niagara Falls on Friday night. ONLY OTHER notable hockey topic on the main sheet _ these days is that of the current Russian Nationals' hockey " tour. They whipped Canada's Nationals 4-0, with ease on Friday night in London, beat them again 8-6, in Quebec on Sunday and tonight, they play a team of Junior All-Stars, at Maple Leaf Gardens. Actually, tonight's game is listed as Russia vs Marlboros, but for this one, the Toronto Marlies have brought up quite a few all-stars from other Junior "A" teams and they have also acquired the services of Joey Bamford, no longer a Junior, who used to play his Junior hockey in Guelph. Last season, in a game against Russia, Joey performed puck-stopping miracles to help his Fort William mates hold the Russians to a 3-3 tie, in a game up there. Tonight's game we suspect -- will be a moment of truth for Canadian hockey 'brass'. If the Russians handle a Canadian Junior All-Star team without any sweat -- then we'll all have to admit what has been apparent for the past few years namely, that Canadians may have discovered or invented ---- or whatever you like -- the game of hockey, but right riow, especially playing under the old standards or near "'original' rules ~ the Russians are the best.
