He will preside at the 12th annual conference cae in September, | | i Divers Died Via Weather, Overloaded WIARTON, Ont. (CP)--A cor- oner's jury said Thursday that four Toronto men ~*5 drowned on an underwater photography expedition in Lake Huron lost their lives because of weather conditions and an overloaded boat. Prof. Roger Deane, 55, Peter MacFarlane, 38, executive pro- ducer of CFTO-TV; Thomas Nicholson, 26, a draughtsman and Aria Gatti, 41, a photog- rapher, drowned off Cove Is- land sometime after they left Tobermory Oct. 23. The bodies were found Oct, 27. Coroner J. T. H. Robinson re- opened the adjourned inquest, which began Dec. 1, at this community 15 miles northwest of Owen Sound. Tobermory is 50 miles farther northwest. The jury found the expedition should not have been under- taken at the time because of treacherous weather conditions and the boat used was over- loaded. The inquest was told the men were using a 1414-foot boat suit- able for a 35-horsepower out- board motor and a maximum load of 1,350 pounds. LEFT IN STORM Witnesses testified the men left in a storm with a 40-horse- power motor and a load of about 2,000 pounds, They car- ried no transport department- approved lifejackets. The expedition planned by Prof. Deane, a University of Toronto geologist, should have been abandoned even if the proper equipment had been car- ried, the jury decided, and said the men should have sought shelter in the lee of an island. The four had planned to pho- tograph a sunken freighter off Cove Island, eight miles north- west of Tobermory. The jury recommended that boats used for commercial and scientific work should be sub- ject to regulations beyond those for pleasure boaters. It also recommended that ba- sic safety and communications gear should be carried and in- formation on such trips should be filed with proper authorities. 23 Charges Laid In 'Hot-Car' Ring MONTREAL (CP)--A _ King- ston garage owner, John North- rop, is to appear for prelimi- nary hearing in Montreal Dec. 23 on charges of having re- ceived some $500,000 in auto parts stolen in the Montreal area.
