BIBL LESSON Israelis Ignored Prophet By R, H. RAMSEY | A sensitive and deeply-feeling man, Jeremiah has sometimes been called the prophet of doom. Called to prophesy as a young man, it was his fate to stand in the way when his people were rushing headlong toward destruction, to make a_ heroic, effort to stop them and turn them back; to fail, and be com- pelled to step to one side and see the nation he loved defeated, ruined and carried into exile. That Jerusalem would be de- stroyed and the people of Judah taken captive had been an- nounced by prophets for more than a hundred years before it happened. Time and again the Lord sent prophets to warn wayward Israel to repent and return to God for their salva- tion. Josiah heeded the warn- ings, and his reign was marked by religious revival; but it was, | for the most part, superficial. | When Josiah was killed in the} battle of Megiddo, the people} reverted to their former idola- trous state. From then on, the decline of | Judah was rapid. Twenty-two years later the kingdom of Ju- dah was overrun by Babyloni- ans. Jerusalem was destroyed, | the temple burned, and the peo-} ple carried off into captivity.) Through it all, Jeremiah could| do nothing but warn, protest | rectly, he felt that true reform must come from within. No prophet in the Old Testa- ment suffered as many indig- nities because of his faithful- ness to the revealed word of God as did Jeremiah. Scorned and derided by the people he was trying vainly to save, he was imprisoned repeatedly and even flogged during the political upheaval that preceded the Bab- ylonian conquest. Yet he per- isisted in speaking out, com- | pelled by his double loyalty to the people he loved and to this Of Doom sought no public authority and he believed his vocation as a prophet precluded marriage and a family. At this same time Jeremiah's prophetic message reached its dramatic climax with the idea that in the coming day of Is- rael's return, the nation would be born again, know the Lord, with old sins forgotten, and God would make a new covenant with Israel and Judah. The new_ covenant bring a new, personal relation jamong men and between man jand God.
