s SPORTS EDITOR OSHAWA GENERALS were given a party on Tuesday night--the club executives entertained the boys and their girl friends, the executives and their wives, Auditorium commis- sion members, press, radio, etc. It was a fine do and a thoughtful gesture. Club president Russ Humphreys. voiced the official welcome and expressed the executive's happiness in the way the boys were playing. There were words of praise from all sides, both from the Generals' management and the Crushmen's officers. The theme was simply how much the people of Oshawa enjoy and appreciate the way the Gen- erals and the Crushmen are performing and appreciation for the manner jin which the boys are responding, adopting Osh- awa as their home and giving their best to please. The event was a good psychological move, as well as being a sincere gesture of Christmas spirit, goodwill, etc. The pay-off came last night, right in Peterborough, where the Generals came through with an ultra-important 6-4 victory. That put Oshawa four points out in front, in the OHA Junior "'A" race and it just may have provided the gap the Generals will need, to 'stay in first place, when they hit the 'home stretch" of the schedule, THE GENERALS couldn't have given their loyal fans a better Christmas gift! To be sitting on top of the heap, at this festive season, should please the heart of every hockey fan. We'll not see the Generals in action here now, until New Year's Day, because meanwhile, they play in Montreal on Sunday, play Niagara Falls Flyers in Boston on Monday, and then return home. But they have said 'Merry Christmas" to loca hockey fans in a very tangible way. Whitby Lasco Steelers Whip Weston Dodgers BY CLIFF GORDON Whitby Lasco Steelers, of the Metro Jr. B Hockey League, gave coach Jim Cherry and Manager Ivan Davie an early Christmas present last night, as they trounced the Weston Dodgers 6-1 right in Weston. The win was the second of the week for the Steelers and moved them to within one point of third place in the league standings. Little Tommy Lavender was the big scoring bomb shell for the Lascos as he fired a trio of goals. His wing mate, Kevin O'Shea, added four assists for his night's work. Other scorers for coach Cherry's Steel men were Al Quintillian, Dave Chal- mers and Dave MacMillan. Jeff Pickup spoiled goalie Ralph Moores bid for a shutout at the 6.48 mark of the third and final period. Moore was injured just seconds later when high sticked and retired for re- pairs, but returned to play a standout game. The entire Whitby team played very well for a full 60 minutes in last night's game and th TOM LAVANDER ers appear to have shaken their mid-season slump. . .. There is no rest for the Steelers as they ;|Markham, drew the praise of both coach Jim Cherry and manager Davie. Whitby held a strong upper hand for most of the game. They led 2-0 at the end of 20 minutes of action, 4-0 at the end of the head into Brampton for a game with the high flying Seven Ups on Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. and then play a boxing day af- fair here at the Whitby arena against the same Pop Men on second and outscored' the charges of a disappointed Ken Avarall 2-1 in the final 20 minutes of action. The third period was somewhat rough as the Dodgers sensing defeat started to rough it up and were given the thumb by the officials. Bill Lastic a former Whitby player got the bounce at the 3:55 mark of the third for) shoving the referee. Feelings) were keen on both sides with) @ number of small flare ups. Wayne Cheesman, who was benched in Monday night's game, was refused permission to board the bus for last night's game for a further breach of club rules.
