By ROBERTA ROESCH If you are seeking a job after age 40 and haven't worked be- fore, you have to make a start somewhere. And often you will find that that first job isn't what you had in mind at all. This is the subject that--if it were possible--I would like to i scribe in red and underline in green as a special Christmas message for all the women who have told me that as soon as the holiday season is over, they are going to look for a job. "This is the year," is the way I hear it, "This is the year I be- gin. I am really planning to get a good start and find out just what I want to do."' Right off, I would like to stress the point that 'f you are really sincere in making a state- ment like the above, you prob- lably will have to take an initial) |job that is entirely different) from the one you have in mind. |LEADS TO NEW JOBS But if you realize this and! take whatever is offered to you,} you will no doubt find that that} first job you take may Jead you to a second job that is more in line with the work you want to do. This- is exactly what hap- pened to one woman of 40 I Many A Minor Position Leads To That Big Chance skills. Whatever was offered to her was work she turned right down, since it was always far removed from the job image in her mind. "Then one day," she said, "I came to the realization that if I really wanted to work, I would have to take what was offered." As a result, she answered an ad for selling advertising by phone for a newly-formed or- ganization that had recently moved to her town, WAS ENTHUSIASTIC "In the beginning, sitting in a cramped, storeroom type of office and spending my time with telephones instead of hu- man beings was certainly not what I had planned on," she said. And in the end, this woman said, it led to a promotion, too, because she made so many sales her boss wasn't long in deciding she cold get along well with people and knew how. to sell her ideas. Consequently, when her boss needed someone to help put over the: firm's ideas and to or- ganize campaigns and functions, he switched her to that spot. As a result, her second job in the world of work is almost @ twin to the one she sought--be- fore she took her first step. BAHA'I WORLD FAITH Teoches: !
