Zo FHS QMMAWA TIMES. faterdar. Jenueny 8, 1966 SPORTS MENU' By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR THE OHA JUNIOR "A" schedule race has taken some topsy-turvy twists since Christmas Day. Oshawa Generals, for instance were considered to be away out in front but they've lost their last three starts and are now just one of three teams up there in front, competing for top position. Peterborough came up with a four-goal rally in the third period the other night, to defeat Toronto Marlboros, and that put the Liftlock City team tied with Oshawa Generals, "for total points. London Nationals eased the pressure a little -- they knocked off Hamilton Red Wings, and ended their long streak. The win put London up in 8th place, ahead of St. Catharines -- first time London has been out of the cellar since early in the schedule opening. Last night, in Kitchener, the home team defeated visiting St. Catharines 3-2, so that leaves St. Kitts on the bottom of the heap. LAST NIGHT'S defeat up in Niagara Falls, puts a big onus on the team for tonight. It's a matter of record -- Oshawa Generals haven't been defeated for three games in succession this season, until this last 1966 flop. First place, in the final OHA Junior "'A" standings, has got to be the most coveted spot. Right now, it's a three-way race between Peterborough, Oshawa and Niagara Falls. If Generals want to grab off that top spot, they've got to return to winning form on their home ice, and in addition, pick up the odd win away from home. In the meantime, Peterborough's top scor- ers, aided by competent substitutes, are really rolling. e "BIG FISH CONTEST", the annual competition conduct- ed throughout the province, by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, of which Oshawa's own "Bill" Owens was the 1965 Fish Committee Chairman, finds several rod- and-reel enthusiasts from this area, listed in the prize list, in line for the awards and cash prizes, donated each year by Molson's. J. R. Swales, of Pickering, landed a 6 Ib. 15 oz. specimen to take third-place laurels in the largemouth bass section and in fifth place, with a fish that weighed 6 lbs. 10 ozs., was Walter C. Sewell, of Oshawa. Both anglers brought their fish out of Rice Lake. In the smallmouth bass division, "Peggy" McInnes, of Ajax, fishing in the Severn River, landed one that greighed 6 Ibs. 3 ozs., taking second- place honors, in this group. In fifth place was L. B. Samis, of Bowmanville, with a smallmouth that weighed exactly six pounds. We had no big pickerel caught by anyone from these parts, but the first prize catch was a 16-pound, 12-ounce "daddy", landed by Clement Hebert, of North Bay, in Lake Nipissing water. ONLY NEW "all-time record" to be set in 1965 was in the rainbow trout class. Wes Martin of Owen Sound got one that went 16 lbs. 9 ozs. It is interesting to note that five of the top six rainbow caught last year, were hooked by Owen Sound residents. Back in 1964, John Sharp of Oshawa, landed an 11-pound, 3-ounce speckled trout, which still holds the all-time record in this division of the Big Fish Contest. This year's winner, Alf Childs, Sr., of Fort William, wasn't even close -- his "'speckle" weighed seven pounds even. Wayne Chidley, of Oshawa, was in 9th place, with one that was "five-and-five'. The maskinonge group produced an in- teresting observation. The biggest "muskie"' caught last year weighed 48 pounds even and was caught in the St. Lawrence River, near Edwardsburg, by S. V. Levere Sr., of Cardinal. Carroll Levere won second prize, with one 47 Ibs. 8 ozs., and Mike Levere was fifth with a 42-pounder. All the Leveres reside in Cardinal and each caught his "big one' in the game waters. We'd say those Levere boys know of a pretty good fishing spot. If our readers are interested in figuring out the cash prizes -- they are worth, in 1-2-3-etc, order, the sums of $100-$75-$50-$25-$25 -- and then $15 down to 10th place. BRIGHT BITS -- Ohawa's schoolboy curlers, who were among the eliminated victims, when Brian Lawrie's Mark- ham rink captured the District honors, in the playoffs at Oshawa Curling Club, a couple of weeks ago, will be pleased to learn that they were at least defeated by one of the best. Laovrie's rink defeated Kim Brown's Port Credit rink, 13-4, in the Toronto-District final, at the Brown and Stone Club, to earn the right to represent this entire area, in the pro- vincial Schoolboy Championships, to be played in Peterbor- ough, two weeks from today ... SOMETHING NOVEL in local curling circles is being staged today, at the Oshawa Curling Club, with 16 rinks participating in the annual Vice- Skips Bonspiel, in a three-game competition, with -their first draw at 11:00 a.m. while the 9:00 a.m. draw will see 16 ladies' rinks competing in a separate competition. Both bon- spiels are three-game events ,but in each case, only the top eight rinks will compete in the final third games INTER.
