A WIRE-THIN beam of light can be bounced 40 to 400 times between these mirrors set 100 feet apart in the basement corridor of National Research Council laboratories at Ottawa. The bundle of light beams will be enclosed in a 16-inch steel pipe which can be fill- ed with various chemical gasses so that scientists can measure chemical absorp- tions and find out more THREE NEW STUDIES Oh, What To Do About G TORONTO (CP) -- General eriticism of Ontario's Grade 13 and suggestions for either im- provement or elimination of the course resulted from three stu- dies by members of the On- tario Institute for Studies in Edication the Institute said Tuesday. One study by Dr. Cicely Wat- osn and Patricia Lyle was! based on 1,281 questionnaires filled out by Grade 13 students rade 13? They could also lead to more knowledge about the atmos- phere on distant planets, and what happens during the mil- lionth of a second in which a chemical reaction takes place. Dr. D. A. Ramsay, head of the project, said in an. inter- view it will be a year before all the engineering work and in- strumentation is completed, but the council will then have a ver- satile and highly - sophisticated tool with which to study the structure of molecules in more detail than has been possible so far. a Using the research council's own engineering facilitics and staff, the out-of-pocket cost of the project will be about $25,000. If it were designed and built to order by a commercial instru- ment - maker, the new facili- ties might cost 10 times that, an NRC spokesman said. BOUNCE LIGHT The initial stage of the new project was achieved when Dr. Ramsay's team bounced a beam of light as thin as fence wire 40 times between highly- polished mirrors in a sub-base- ment corridor of the NRC la- boratories here. The mirrors ars mounted on pedestals built on bedrock be- low the building to guard against vibrations, can be so finely adjusted that the num- ber of times the light is bounced back and forth before going into a spectrograph can be increased to 100 or even 200. The next step is to fit 16-inch seamless steel pipe between the mirrors so that the light can be made to pass through various gases pumped into it. Pressures up to 10 times atmosphericii ¢ pressure may be built up in the pipe, having the effect of pass- ing the light a distance 10 times as great. In about a year's time, the council will have finished con- struction of what Dr. Ramsay describes as a superb new spec- trograph. It will be used to break the light beam, has passed through a mile or more of the chemical gases, into a spectrum which can be photographed, ARE DISTINCTIVE Dark lines appearing on the rainbow-like spectrum show ab- sorption of the light by the chemicals, and each compound of the basic elements has a pat- tern as distinctive as a finger- print. With the patterns established, the scientists can add to man's knowledge of atmospheres on distant planets. With the new equipment, they also hope to record the spectra of chemicals during the millionth of a second in which change is occurring. port by the provincial govern- It's got the flavor Canada loves best!
