Scottish- Gaelic 44, Adam's gon, By LESLIE MILLIN VICTORIA (CP)--A -Vancou- vr police chief who boasted. he never bought a fishing licence is one of the people whose story is recorded in Bill Ward's scrapbook. | Also featured are tales of pit- lampers--hunters who use .a bright lantern-to -attract- deer on dark nights. Ward, who joined the British Columbia fish and game branch as a game warden 20 years ago, has always had a literary bent. It led him to the post of game branch information officer. One result is his scrapbook tracing the history of wildlife management in the province back nearly a century. Ward is also responsible for the B.C. Wildlife Review, a modest pub- i | lication with 'circulation of 32,- 000, mostly within B.C. The scrapbook is a_ passion that just grew. Starting with a page of old metal game badges and-a second page covered with Chief Never Purchased B.C. Fishing Licence cloth badges and shoulder pat- ches; it includes yellowing clippings of newspapers of the 1870s, samples' of official docu- ments, tags, licences, pictures, letters and official orders. "One hundred' years from now is when this book will really be appreciated," Ward says. ' 'One official order told ward- ens to be on the lookout for the police chief who claimed he had never purchased a fishing lic- ence. They were supposed to jcheck for themselves but he |was apparently an elusive ang- ler, BATTLE WITH FARMERS The scrapbook also has de- tails of a battle fought by Sooke farmers against their joint foes --deer and game wardens. The farmers said the deer were eat- jing their turnips and potatoes. They wanted the game board abolished and the Game' Act amended to allow pitlamping. } 4--The Loner 10:00 P.M. %--Run For Your Life Inemoke 10:13 PLM, é2--Ju 7--The King Family 11:00 P.M, 1-04)-4-471--Newen Weether) Bperie his PLM, leck Reoter 11:30 PM, &--Festure Showcase 'Movie 1114 PA, 9--Movie SURBAY 9:00 A.M. i--Cathedrel Chimes $--Tides and Tralle 7--Shenaoigans 8--Biwene Dew 9:30 A.M. --itallan Journal #--Cartoon Playhoves 7--Peeter Potamus 8--The Anewer 10:00 A.M, 11--Carasello 6-Heraid of Trum 7-8--Rocketship ¢é--Sunday School 6--Extension 2-This is The Life 4--Uncle Jerry's Club 11:00 A.M, Ti--OHA Jr. "A" Hockey @--TiWe is The Lite 7--Bullwinkle Show 6-4--Church Service 2--Fronters Of Faith 11:30 A.M. East-West vulnerable NORTH Ko98 AKQIO monds. eas The declarer generally has an advantage over the defenders because he sees every one of the 26 cards held by his side. As a result hé knows exactly which high cards are missing, as well as the combined number of cards in each sult held by the opponents. The defenders labor under a corresponding handicap , since each of them can see his own hand and dummy's, They do not know their precise high- card strength or distribution, nor can they tell exactly where declarer is weak or strong. The situation prould be sad for the defending side were it not that many means are available: to overcome the natural dis-~ advantages of defense, Many conventions have been devised and adopted whereby the de. fensive 'partners can transmit vital information to each other, It is highly important for a de- fensive pair to know these cone" ventions, Take this hand where West highest card of a worthless had bid. East won with the jack and continued with the ace,. isthe conventional play. The session of the five.) South dropped the nine and ten, deliberately concealing tha East that West had it. East now shifted to the of clubs, on which West pla the seven to encourage a club continuation. West thought that East night have had five dia- would have no more, of diamonds and defeated the contract. He knew that West 7-5-4-2, which would have called for a fourth best lead of the deuce. Declarer was therefore deuce, or both. Properly used, defensive con- ventions can be mighty helpful. RICHARD from the University of Mont- real Carabins of the Senior Intercollegiate Hockey League.
