Mr. McTaggart, who lives at 245 Roxborough ave., has col- 'lected more than 7,000 authentic model soldiers over the last 20 years. Born in Gore Bay on Manl- toulin Island 36 years. ago, he has lived in Oshawa since 1950, was a letter carrier here for 10 years and now is employed at General Motors of Canada Ltd. Mr. McTaggart recalled in an interview that the first two sets | he purchased when he was 15} were the French Cuirassiers | and the Cameron Highlanders, FOUNDNG MEMBER He is a founding member of | soldier societies in England, Scotland, the United States and Australia and trades with a fel- low hobbyist in New Zealand. He said most collectors have a large selection of- military books which are used to re- search the types of uniforms, equipment and weapons of the men they are portraying. His own library consists of about 250 military books. . Mr. McTaggart also has a small collection of military relics'such aS swords, muskets, helmets and badges. He has a sabre which he says was used by the famed pilot Billy Bishop, who prior to transferring to the Royal Flying Corps, was a member of the Canadian Mount- ed Rifles.
