é § THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursdey, Jenuery 20, 1966 zs By Geo, H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR AND THAT'S THAT -- or at least, we certainly hope so! Oshawa Generals snapped their long winless streak, here at home last night and did it in convincing fashion, holding the defending Memorial Cup champions better than even, over a hard-fought 50-minute span and then exploding with a three-goal home-stretch 'sprint, in the last three min- utes, for their 6-1 triumph. Generals had been in their "enakes and ladders" skiddoo for three weeks during which period they dropped six decisions and managed only one tie. Now they are in third place but back in the running for top slot, trailing Flyers by only two points, bat with two games less remaining. The league-leading Petes are four points up on Oshawa and have one game in hand, Wayne Cashman's two goals and a pair of assists, stamps him as the pace-setter in last night's win but what was most gratify- ing was the fact that in this solid team effort, four others shared in the scoring honors. Flyers didn't have the legs to stay with the Generals, a fact clearly evidenced near the end when Oshawa defenceman Roberts drew a tripping penalty. and while he served his two-minute stint, Generals scored twice, dominating the action, even though short- handed. Generals can close in on the leaders, with a win in their next game -- since that will be Saturday night, here at the Civic Auditorium and the visitors will be the "Petes", ONTARIO Curling Association district playdowns, for this area, were held yesterday, with Silver Tankard competition at Uxbridge and the Governor-General's Cup games played at Annandale Club, Pickering. Unionville's powerful entry (these are double-rink competitions) of. rinks skipped by Bob Lawrie and Murray Roberts, emerged as the Tankard win- ners, nosing out Oshawa Curling Club's representatives by a two-shot margin, in a sensational curling battle. The Murray Roberts-Ray Grant foursome nosed out Paul Michael's rink 9-8 and Bob Lawrie edged Gord MacMillan's foursome 7-6. Oshawa CC eliminated Sutton and Uxbridge, on their way to the final round. Against Sutton, Wayne Hussey, Bob Johannson, "Rich" Vesey and Gord MacMillan dropped a SPORTS MENU| BILLY WHITE, Oshawa Gen- eral centreman, closes in on 10-6 decision but their teammates 'Gi' Goulding, Clair Peacock, Jack Perry and Paul Michael, won their game 16-6. It was a nip-and-tuck affair against Uxbridge, Michael's rink being held to a tie while MacMillan's rink won their game by one shot ... OSHAWA Curling Club rinks won out in the Governor-General's Cup eliminations at Annandale. The two rinks were Gordon Dyck, Lloyd Sturch, "Ruddy" Andrews and Ray Webster, skip; Austin Wiltshire, Jim Naylor, Reg Smith and Fred Thompson, skip. The OCC rinks defeated Unionville in their morning game, by a com- fortable margin; had a sterner match against Whitby and then won over Oshawa Golf Club's entry, in the final round, gvithout much trouble. In the round against Whitby, Thomp- son's rink lost to Jack Beaton's rink by two shots but Webster's rink offset this with an eight-shot margin over Claire Rich's rink. BRIGHT BITS -- The Ontario Schoolboy Curling Cham- pionships, held here in Oshawa last year, will be held in Peterborough this Saturday with eight district winners com- peting for the provincial title and right to go to St. John's, Newfoundland, in February, for the Canadian Champion- ships. Rinks from Ottawa, London, Gravenhurst, Peterbor- ough, Owen Sound, Oakville, Guelph and the local district winners, young Lawrie's rink, from Markham, will be the ¢ontestants in the Liftlock City on Saturday ... HAROLD BALLEM, Bowmanville's demon five-pin bowler, just missed out on "a perfect game" Monday night, in the Bowmanville Mixed Major League. He rolled 277-406-383 for a fine 1066 triple. Last Sunday, competing in the TV roll-off at O'Connor Bowl in Toronto, Ballem tied for top prize money with Corky Miller, both rolling 2527, for their 10-game string. Bill Begley of Toronto won the TV appearance rights with 2610 -- but he was not eligible for prize money.
