R, BUCKLEY Plant Research Institute During the past 15 years the search for new and different trees has been greaily intensi- fied by an increase im ue uc- mand for kinds that are more compatible with -utility lines, modern homes, suburban areas, and narrow streets. The dam- age wrought by the Dutch elm disease has led to a demand for trees that are not likely to de- velop di of such epid proportions. Most new shade trees intro- duced today are selections made from specimens already grow- ing in streets, private gardens, public parks, and arboretums. Such plants that have already reached maturity and have shown traits amenable to cul- ture under today's conditions are propagated vegetatively and released as new cultivars. As a result, there are now more uni- form trees for city streets and trees of restricted form for use in small home gardens. In the woody-plant section of the test gardens at the Plant Research Institute a large num- ber of these newer trees have} been tried for many. years. It| is still not possible to evaluate their ultimate height, root spread and habit, but a reason- able estimate can be made of their usefulness by observa- sions made of their growth, transplanting, prelim- inary habit and botanical affin- ity. The following include some of the most promising trees: MANY MAPLES Many maples have been in- troduced in recent years. One of them is the Harlequin maple (Acer platanoides 'Drummondii It is a very distinctive tree with its bright creamy-white New And Different Trees To Meet Changing Needs new green ash that doesn't pro- duce the mass of rather un- sightly seeds usually associated with this species. It also has a more attractive, uniform habit ana dackar . croan elacev leaves, The thornless honey locust cultivars (Glediisia triacanthos 'Inermis') have become ex- tremely popular for street and home planting. The original Moraine locust had: a serious trunk defect that had to be rec- tified by staking but \n-cfones later developed this defect has been eliminated. New cultivars of promise are Imperial, with a more symmetrical and dens- er branching habit and deep- green leaves spaced closer than in other honey locusts; Skyline, a pyramidal form with deep- green leaves that change to a) golden color in the fall;- and Shademaster, a cultivar that grows faster than all the others and has straight, upright branches, In its initial year in purple in spring and keep this color until fall, Judd's cherry (Prunus juddii) is perfectly hardy in Ottawa and should prove popuiar in areas where the true Japanese cherry does not flourish. It has the same beautiful cherry bark of the Sar, erry, one of its par- ents, and large single pink) flowers. | BRIGHT GRIEN LEAVES Several new selections of the littleleaf linden (Tulia cordata) are now available. All of these were chosen for their broad pyramidal shape and' bright- green leaves. Most promising is the selection 'Green spire', which has already developed a perfectly shaped head in our Test Garden. | So many new mountain ashes) (Sorbus species) are now avail- able that it is hard to choose the most outstanding.
