Other speakers also called for ce in Viet Nam. It was the first stu- dent protest in Saigon dur- ing the current political cri- sis. (AP Wirephoto) Loan Used To Assist Purchase TORONTO (CP) -- Account- ant O. W. Parkes told a royal commission Tuesday that a $100,000 loan by Atlantic Accept- ance Corp. to Treasure Island Gardens in London, Ont., was used to buy part of a shopping centre property for $6,000. Mr. Parkes said gross profit on the purchase and sale of the 1.88-acres in the shopping cen- tre was $94,000. He told the commission in- Vestigating the collapse last dune of Atlantic that legal fees of $9,500 in the transaction were paid out of the money to the London law firm of Reid and McKillop. The land was bought from Mrs. Julia Faust who held it in trust for Marco Holdings Ltd. Atlantic made the loan to Treasure Island Gardens April 29, 1963, Mr. Parkes said. It was turned over the same day to Treasure Island Properties which bought the property. Treasure Island Properties was the owner of the shopping eentre until it was taken over by British Mortgage and Trust Ltd. for arrears of mortgage yments. Stratford-based Brit- ih Mortgage has since been taken over by Victoria and Grey Trust Co. of Lindsay, Ont. Marco Holdings, of which Donald Reid of the law firm was a director, loaned a total of $85,000 to Fredericks Depart- ment Stores Ltd., which even- tually went bankrupt, Mr. Parkes said. NOT AVERAGE MAN'S DREAM OR NIGHTMARE Budaet Directed At Big Business OTTAWA (CP)--The tooth- less may find solace in Mitch- ell Sharp's federal budget. It also holds particular in- terest for those who raise trout or grow carnations. It just isn't an average man's dream or nightmare. The major proposals seem to be aimed in the main at big business. But there are some highly individual changes in the tax structure. For instance, imported trout feed will continue to enter duty-free until July 1, 1968. Tariffs of 12% per cent on plant cuttings of new carnation varieties are abolished. There were a few tantalizing cuts in duties on liquorice. EXTENDS TAX The budget extends the 11- per-cent federal sales tax to retread tires effective at once. But what the average man loses on retreads, he may gain on false teeth. The 1l- per-cent tax on them is being withdrawn. However, the federal sales tax falls on manufacturers and may not be passed along to the toothless. The major-sales tax exemp- tions apply to production ma- chinery. The tax on building materials remains as a check on the construction boom. But there is a something- for-everyone, even if it is practically nothing, atmos- phere in a series of minor changes. The immigrant may bring in his old mattress, if it is fumigated. He may also bring in his auto duty-free. The pre- vious $2,500 ceiling on autos, after which duty had to be paid, is being lifted. As for income taxes, all but the relatively poor will pay more beginning June 1. CLAUSE PLUGGED That old escape clause, charitable donations, has been sealed. After Jan. 1, 1967, donations to charity will be allowed as a deduction for income tax purposes only if the church or institution registers and files a return on it to the revenue de- partment. Mr. Sharp urged moderation and restrint on spending in general as a way to check in- flation of prices. He said his budget aims mainly at curbing price in- creases and "pacing the pros- perity. All Canadians could help by saving more and spending less. Editors' Trips "Free", MP Says OTTAWA (CP) -- Revenue Minister Benson told the Com- mons Tuesday he will look into a report the federal government is providing free trips to a group of Canadian weekly newspaper editors. Mr. Benson said he would find out if the report is true, and if so, who is paying for it and tell H. W. Herridge (NDP--Koot- enay West) svho brought up the subject. Mr. Herridge, during discus- Ke sion of supplementary spending estimates of the external affairs department, said the govern- ment has in recent years pro- vided free tours for weekly newspaper editors. He didn't know which depart- ment was paying for them, but an editors group now is on a MP Throws House In A Tizzy Works Minister McTiraith aimed at bringing the matter before the Commons Tuesday OTTAWA (CP) Liberal back-bencher Ralph Cowan al- most single-handedly threw up roadblocks to government plans In the Comuiwns 'Tussuas: The MP for York Humber Over Death Penalty Debate ended with Speaker Lucien |Lamoureux rulirig the govern- ment must find another way. Mr. Mcliraith vowed outside the consent of all MPs to keep the Commons he would "'look at it going until all who wanted to speak had the chance and were ready to vote.
