JOHN BUCHAN a biography by Janet Adam Smith John Buchan was a man whose remarkably varied ca- reer embraced writing "he Thirty-Nine Steps'? and being Governor-General of Canada. He was Director of Information in the First World War, the biographer of Montrose and Sir Walter Scott, friend of T. E. Lawrence and Roosevelt, Mem- ber of Parliament and confi- dant of Baldwin and Ramsay MacDonald. The. story of his career from his Lowland Scottish back- ground, as a son of the manse, to his final days in Canada, touches on many of the most interesting people of his day. Into his sixty-four years John Buchan packed enough to fill several ordinary lifetimes. This is the first biography to tell the whole story of his eventful life. McLAUGHLIN GIFT The author, a Scot who shares much of Buchan's back- ground, has made full use of his private papers in Britain and in Canada (his library and many of his papers were presented to Queen's University, Kingston by Col. and Mrs. R. S. McLaugh- lin.) We are presented with a full-length protrait of a man 'with a boundless capacity for hard work, deep family ties, a romatic who was also a realist, a public figure who befriended the young and needy, one who never allowed his constant ill health to diminish his zest for living. As Lord Tweedsmuir, Buchan arrived in Canada in_ the troubled year prior to the ab- dieation of Edward VIII and died in this country beiore atl Give Them The CHANCE To Enjoy Music Now! He trav- elled widely about the Domin- ion which he claimed was '"'like Scotland on a grander scale." PEACE ADVOCATE His loyalty and enthusiasm for this country, hampered by his constitutional position which made any initiative almost im- possible, make this part of the book particularly dramatic. His tricky relationship with Mac- kenzie King and his attempts with Roosevelt to prevent the dictators from making war are discussed in some detail. In a chapter on Buchan's novels, the author attempts to analyze the special qualities of the Bucan thrillers which he turned out so effortlessly in the midst of a business and _ politi- cal career. What a story the creator of 'Richard Hannay"' and '"'Mr. Standfast" could have written with himself as _ the hero! HOW THE HEATHER LOOKS: a joyous journey to the British sources of children's books, by Joan Bodger. In the summer of 1958, Bodger family, parents Joan and John, children Ian and Lucy, travelled in a small car through England and Scotland to see the landscape that pro- vided background for many of their favorite books. The parents, both American with English _ backgrounds, planned their motor trip to in- clude visits to the scenes im- mortalized by such authors as Caldecott, Beatrix Potter, A. A. Milne, Kipling and Arthur Ransome. They discovered Arthur's Camelot, Toad's Hall, Sherwood Forest, Christopher Robin's "enchanted place' and many others. the This is a travel book with a difference. They lived in a cara- van in Cornwall, explored little market towns and applied adult ingenuity to finding sights the children would enjoy. It is re- freshing to read of a family with such boundless enthusiasm for our literary heritage. One can imagine that many a teacher or parent might use the Bodger adventures and reading list as a guide to an imaginary trip through Brit- ain.
