THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, April 4, 1966 2] Teen-age Girls Like Formals -- The Boys Heartily Approve! Teen agers according hava di mals are the "Cat's meow". While opinions expressed by High School and College stu- dents interviewed this week, by a team of fashion reporters, re- vealed no agreement as to whe- ther teen agers should dress for other girls or for boys, on the score of whether formals were a "camp" costume or not, they were unanimous. Suzanne Brosseau, 17, said "We're seen so much in kooky clothes that we like to look old fashioned and romantic once in a while." TREND TO FORMALS Susan Raeburn, a second year McGill Science student, claimed "the trend among teen agers is certainly towards a formal gown for important oc- casions, This popularity began with the granny gown. Boys ac- tually like to see a girl in a nice looking lady-like dress, and they say so. Boys are essentially more conservative than girls, so for dances a girl should dress for her date. Should give him something to remember her by that's romantic and essentially sweet." ' While formality may be in, the to a,shades. One official pointed out d for.|that graduation ceremonies now often included white caps and gowns. Another reason giv- en for he disappearance of white was the "fall graduation" policy of many schools. The graduation dance in spring is considered a spring prom. "In 1956 all the girls were wearing long gowns," recalled the vice-principal in charge of girls at a large Montreal high school. "Towards the 60's fewer and fewer came in long gowns and in 1961-62 there were none. But last year and the year be- fore, the trend started changing again and there were about half and half." Two Ottawa schools reported. that more than half the girls came in long gowns last year and more were ex- pected this year. A girls' guid- ance counsellor at another high school said -- "Last spring the majority were long. Now even at the mid-term stag and drag parties ankle length cotton print dresses are seen." SEYLS SMUULY HAVE BNAr Sheila McDonald of Winnipeg, 17, pointed out that since first long gowns are often a brides- Maid's dress, designers should style dresses with more snap, more '"'in'" details. , Jennifer Hodge summed it up when she said "We may lonk strange to our parents, doing dances like the jerk, the frug and the monkey, but we feel natural doing them. Just like we feel great in a long gown as long as its made for our body and the way we live." Asked to define the young look, Aviva Major, 18, said 'I think the Empire Line is the most flattering silhouette for a teen ager. It hes such variety. Whether its done in an over all Victorian lace, whether its a printed granny gown, or a chif- fon held high by a simple vel- vet ribbon, there's something very much like us in the sil- houette. Perhaps that's because it calle for a natural bust line and a flat tummy, and if we've ~ ua else, most of us have SPECIAL SIZES Long gowns, nowadays, aré very much part of a young girl's wardrobe and the sooner designers make special size fit- tings in long gowns that look young and that flow naturally, then we'll all be happier be- cause parents seem to think we can't do any harm when we're dressed in formals, Even the deadlines for getting home are later." No wonder the discotique set has decided that formal gowns are the "Cats Meow". Looks For Springtime '66 LOOK FOR...SPRING SHAPES -- the smock dress completely at ease with or with- out sleeves. When it comes to wearing white fur the graduation ball, many of the teenagers interviewed were very positive in their stand against white for their first formal. "White is nothing," Jennifer Hodge pointed out. "It does no- thing for your complexion, un- less you're dark, Then its like wearing a color." 5 "They've come away from white," a girls' adviser at one school reported." "Maybe as many as half wore white last year, but colors and prints were just as popular." PASTELS PREFERRED In 'one Hamilton school no white dresses were worn at last year's ball and in other schools little or no white was reported. Few of the girls interviewed liked the idea of white gowns, although some said the custom still prevailed in some private schools.
