KEEP IN TRIM To Break Pattern Provide Challenge By IDA JEAN KAIN "How can I take the resist- ance out of staying with a diet? I start strong but in 10 days I find myself slipping. In two weeks I'm back to my old fattening ways of overeating. I guess my will is weak. I'm 40 pounds overweight and I really want to lose. Can you offer some encouragement? When the goal is 40 pounds off, there is no blinking the fact that it takes gumption to carry on with your reducing nlans. So, what to do when 'he going gets tough? First, recog- nize you are dealing with a habit pattern, At the place where you gave up on previous diet attempts, you half expect to stop trying. Psychologists point out that in any particular situation the tendency is to do the same as on the previous times. To break the habit pattern, think through the situation and try to decide why you lose interest. A willing- sess to do some serious thinking « fs a big step, for this means you want to face facts honestly. Once you catch on to why you repeat a pattern, you are in a . better position to cope. Grab hold of this -spine-stiff- ening thought. When you feel your interest slackening, give yourself a right good challenge Say to your- self: "Im going to fight this fat sometime, and it might as + well be this very spring! Say this out loud, looking right in the mirror. Its surprising how a challenge to yourself can pull you out of a failure rut. By taking a positive approach you are using your will in the right way. To stay with a pro- tective diet plan is something you want to do. Also, and this ~ is a most important point, you : have fully faced up to the fact that there is no other way to = do it. After two weeks of controlled eating you ate over the hunger- > hurdle. You feel content on » smaller meals. When-you firmly * decide that to revert to your. . Old fattening ways of eating is " no favor to yourself, your haif . Way home. Your. attitude is * more important than the 40 ex- cess pounds to be lost!
