At the year's end, the Medical Staff was comprised of: 29 A OOP LOL A i7 ASSOCIATE STAFF MEMBERS 96 ACTIVE STAFF MEMBERS 6 CONSULTANT STAFF MEMBERS 1 COURTESY STAFF MEMBER 1 HONORARY STAFF. MEMBER -- giving a total of 121 members. In 1964, there were 20,051 admissions while in 1965 there were 19,326 admissions, giving a decrease of 3.1%. Surgical pro- cedures in the main operating room totalled 12,290 in 1965, com- pored with 12,269 in 1964, showing on increase of 0.17%: This year o reverse trend is noted in the Obstetrical Department. In 1964, there were 2,750 deliveries while in 1965 there were 2,524 déliver- ies showing a decrease of 8.2%. It is understood that this is an ob- served phenomenon throughout Canada and the United Stotes. Time has now proven the value of certain special areas in im- proving the quality of potient care. The Intensive Care Unit, develop- ed in 1963, has been of inestimable value in the care and recovery of the critically ill, and in 1965, 316 patients were treated in the Unit. im 1964, the Coronary Unit was established for the seriously ill heart patient who required constont close surveillance by nursing statf and by modem electronic monitoring devices. In 1965, 117 potients were treated here. So importont ore these units that they must undoubtedly be expanded when the new addition permits of more space. The Emergency Department functioned. smoothly and efficient- by in its handling of both minor and mojor ilinesses and injuries, In 1964, this Department treated 237 in-patients and 16,042 out- patients while the comparable figures for 1965 are 317 in-patients and 15,922 outpatients. The physical side of the hospital remains the same. and so the lack of dramatic percentage increases in work volume is explained. However, the general demond for beds continues unabated. At mid February, the Reservations Department recorded 159 adult urgent cases ond 951 odult elective cases awaiting beds. Careful evalua- tion of all these applications must be made constantly. The Admit ting and Discharge Committee of the Medical Staff continues its work on this most difficult task. A bed for each of the waiting pa- tients is applied for in writing by the Attending Physicion ond the Committee processes these applicotions impartially to ensure the fairest allocation of the beds in the shortest possible length of time. Special consideration is given to the more seriously ill and to further. speed the turnover of the waiting lists the Committee oversees the length of time spent in hospital ofter treatment is under way. Where | complete core is not compromised, the earliest possible departure trom the hospital is encouraged. These comments are set forth so that the Community will know that this regulatory supervision is carried on behind the scenes, as it were, in a sincere effort to ac- commodate as many people as possible in the shortest time possible, while for the time being, the number of beds remains static. The Medical Stoff looks forward to the needed and ultimate expansion of hospital facilities in Oshawa and in clese.co-operation with the Boord of Directors, the Administrator and the Director of Nursing Services, dedicates itself to the optimum im. patient core at the. Oshawa Genero! Hospitol. Respectfully Submitted, R. C. ROSS, M.D,, President, Medical Stoff, 1965.
