(CP Photo) Probe Starts Unexpectedly TORONTO (CP) -- The Atlan- tie Acceptance royal commis- sion unexpectedly started in- camera hearings Tuesday be- cause of the serious illness of C. P. Morgan, a central figure in the hearings. Mr: Morgan was president of Atlantic Acceptance Corp. from its beginnings in 1954 until its collapse in 1965. The royal commission investi- gating the collapse will take evi- dence from Mr. Morgan, who is in bed. awaiting admittance to hospital. Mr. Justice Samuel Hughes, head of the royal commission, said.at today's 10-minute hear- ing that Mr. Morgan "'is se- riously ill and in need of sur- gery." He said Mr. Morgan has been a central figure in most of the transactions which the commis- sion has dealt with so far and this would be the case in the months ahead, PUBLIC INTEREST Mr. Justice Hughes said it 'was in the best interests of the public that evidence be taken from Mr. Morgan before he is admitted to hospital. 'Mr. Morgan had taken the in-| nave no interest in central Can- itiative and offered to give evi-| ada--yet." ~ dence while he wasn't under sedation. Because of the small size of Mr. Morgan's bedroom, only his own counsel and commission staff would be allowed to hear! his testimony. Commission doctors had ex- amined Mr. Morgan and were satisfied that-his- illness. was of a serious nature. However, de- r tails were not disclosed, The hearings were adjourned to Wednesday morning at which | time they may be adjourned | again while further evidence is! taken from Mr. Morgan. Its growth is attracting the large and experienced European airlines who are the capitalists of the air industry. "There's still enough business for everyone but the interest of the Europeans is posing a prob- lem," says Mr. Martyn. '"'It's |more serious in the East where | Canadian Pacific had its biggest market before it dropped out of the charter business. The West Coast was affected next but they European carriers, because of lower wages and larger com- panies~can compete for Cana- dian business at lower rates al- though they operate the same) type of equipment. | Air Transport Board policy, says Mr. Martyn, is that the European carriers can pick up charters in Canada if Canadian firms can't handle the trip. However, in practice, permis- sion appears to be granted if there is no objection from Cana- dian carriers, says Mr. Martyn. "The Air Transport Board will have to pay more attention to this problem as time goes on because this is a developing in- dustry and it is in the, national interest to protect the Canadian firms in the business."
