Behe ar i its AO GARDEN GUIDE Beauty And Usefulness Added _ With Vastly Improved China Aster By A. R. BUCKLEY Plant Research Institutes Those who-find the captivat- ing charm of China asters al- most impossible.to resist would have gloried in the beauty of the one hundred and fifty dif- ferent varieties under study at the Plant Research Institute's Test Garden last summer. ~" It is doubtful if ever such a large and diverse collection has been gathered together in the history of the test gardens. The results of this test revealed, among other things, that the China aster has been im- proved tremendously over the past ten years, that-newer types and varieties have added to the beauty and usefulness of the group and that they can be grown with less fear: of aster wilt and aster 'yellows, two diseases that have fade them so difficult to grow in recent years. Aster wilt has been almost extinguished by resistant var- jeties, and newer pesticides are | able to cope with the leafhop- ers that spread the aster yel- s lows.' : DIFFERENT STRAINS China aster varieties are di- vided into different named strains or types, based on the flower structure. Each strain contains a number of varieties of separate colors. There is a great similarity between the types and some could quite pos- sibly be grouped into larger divisions. The tests brought to light a number of improved cutting strains with iarger flowers and rigid stems. The older Ostrich Plume, Giant Crego, and Queen of the Market types so popular a few years ago have. been largely superseded by these new types. Good bedding kinds of a few years ago, such as the Kirkwell asters, have been overshadowed by varieties with larger flowers, dwarfer and more compact habits, and pro- longed flowering periods, Although no plants in any of a the trials have ever received the perfect score the 'Perf tion' strain is not badly named, for this is a beautiful series of strong-stemmed asters, It is an improvement over every other large-flowered wide - petaled type. All its flowers gre fully ana never reveal wide double Gus swe open malformed centres, a typical: fault of the older kinds, The 'Perfection' strain is sim- ilar to, but better than, the chrysanthemum - flowered Ball type asters, which for a few years dominated the cut-flower class, ANEMONE ASTERS Catalogues contain many strains of pompom or anemone asters which are smaller than the Perfection and Ball types but are quite distinctive, quite easy to arrange and last well in water. Most popular among these are the Princess, Geisha, Ambria, Duchess, Pompom, 'and Bouquet types, which con- tain a large array of superb colors, including'yellow. The Pompom or Anemone types have a large number of 10 Yeers Experience in ANTENNAS & TOWERS Mester Systeme Fer Apte, ete. The disk florets, which are in real- ity. complete flowers with an- thers, stigmas, and petals, are packed so close together that they form a solid head, Some are wide open with reflexed petals and others more or less elosed. In some varieties the disk and ray florets are dif- ferent colors, forming a good contrasting. Harmony. 'Salmon Pink', one of the Ambria group, is salmon pink with a yellow centre, and the beautiful Prin- cess Marsha of the Princess groups has wine-red ray petals and a cream centre. | The Princess group contains | some of the very best asters for cut flowers. The flowers are not | more than three and a_ half} inches wide but have quite dis- |tinctive coloring and are easy +to-arrange in a very charming | way. The best in this group is | Princess Alice with medium- blue ray florets and a yellow | centre; next best is Princess Rose, light-pink with a yellow centre; and Princess Barbara, purple with a yellow centre. Powderpuff, a well-known cut- ting variety, is placed. in the | Bouquet group, which is an anemone atrain. It contains a large selection of colors of rose- pink, purple and white, all with yellow centres, QUILLED OR NEEDLE If you wish to try something | unfque as well as beautiful I would suggest the Cactus or quilled or needle types. These are sure to impress you with! their stiff straight petals from | an inch to an inch and a half long and pointed tips incurving only very slightly in the centre, Highest rated were' Lavender, ight lavender blue with a} How centre; Radiance, rose red; and Violet, dark blue and gold. The best of these in mixed colors is called 'Unicum'. Try this for startling p tion and unique cee: oirg Of course the aster family still has the large giant vari- eties, but you must be prepared to sacrifice stiffness and straightness of stem: for large five-and-a-half-inch flowers on somewhat c ur ving branches. They are of some value for the exhibition table of cut - flower classes but the stems curve too much for good arrangements. Those who would like a neat bed of asters to greet them after the summer holidays would be delighted with the Best-of-All or the Dwarf Queen series, These bloomed a solid month. The dwarf compact plants had quite large flowers that kept their beauty throughout. Available in seprate colors of clear pink, rose, white, and _ purple-blue, these bedding types may be sown in April to give a good display from mid-August to mid- | September. IT'S HERE!
