It is a dangerous fallacy that black coffee is a certain antidote impairment. The Ontario Safety League says that coffee has no effect whatsoever on alcoho] in the body. It is a miid stimulant, _ but, taken to counteract drowsi- ness, its effect is only slight, and transient. It does nothing in cases of alcholic} 2. Here are some excerpts from letters received by BMC's service department, quoted by the Ontario Safety League: "TI was only doing 30 mph at the time when I saw my wheel going on in in front of me. It was a severe shock and I hadn't the nerve to drive fast after it.'"' 'And mind you, this car was Once Auto Status Symbol, Kir Conditioning Popular What used to be epitome of automobile status symbols -- air conditioning -- is now break- ing into all car markets in leaps and bounds. Until recent years, car air conditioning has been installed principally in the more luxuri- our cars, but installations are mow being made in a steadily increasing number of lower- priced models. Beaver Air Con- ditioning, one of Canada's larg- est installers of car air condi- tioning, have installed more than half of their 1965 volume in the lower price range cars. John Gregory, General Sales Manager at Beaver, attributes much of the trend to the fact that "the industry is past the growing pains; people are be- ginning to realize the benefits of having a cool car, free from dust, polien, humidity and fog- ey windows". Mr. Gregory also said "other considerations such as top - notch models being available for $400 guarantees up to 24,000 miles or 24 months and the ease of transferring the air conditioning unit from one car to another have helped in the development'. In the United States, 1964 marked the second year in a 'row when the annual increase in car air conditioning units im- stalled, was almost 30 per cent. This figure is expected to reach 40 percent for 1965 over 1964. United States Automobile Air Conditioning Installations in Units were: 1960, 700,000; 1961, - 725,000; 1962, 1,000,000; 1963, 1,400,000; 1964, 1,800,000; 1965, 2,500,000; * -- Expected for 1965. The Canadian automobile air conditioning market appears headed. for te the same growth--pattem which has de- veloped in the United States. In fact the two largest selling Canadian brands Mark IV and Vornado, are estimating that business will continue to more than double each year, for the next few years, just as it has done in the last two years. The John E. Mitchell Co., manufacturers of the Mark IV, the largest selling unit in the United States, have established a Canadian organization to set- up dealers and to handle the ra- pidly increasing volume of busi- ness, So far in 1965 some 20 new outlets have been added. Auto- matic Radio of Canada Ltd., manufacturers of the Vornado units, have been able to set-up some 60 outlets for car air con- ditioning in Canada. T. W. McLorg, Executive Refrigeration and Air Condition- ing Association, stated that, "the trend over the last two years coupled with the accel- erated growth this year and the prevailing economic conditions, point to the continued rapid ex- pansion of this segment of the air conditioning market. Actual- ly the past couple of years have been mainly years of establish- ing outlets; once these outlets really start to participate om a large scale sales are going to move ahead faster than ever." In the United States almost all the manufacturers including the independents have shared in the increased business. : Ohrysler Corp., in 1960, re- ported that 17 per cent of Chrys- lers and 3 per cent of Plymouths were equipped with air - tioning. So far, im 1965, | knocked unconscious, of money as a convenience." "At the time of reporting this | my wife is expecting and would | like your assurance that there | will be no further mishaps." | $8. Some people will not wear | car seat belts because.they fear | being "trapped" in a_ biazing vehicle. The Ontario Safety League points out that a person wearing a belt at the time of an accident is less likely to be and is therefore better able-to extri- cate himself from the vehicle. In any case, the danger of fire is small. A study of 33,250 injury-producing accidents showed that only 148 resulted in a fire -- less than one-half of one per cent. The incidence of fire was about the same for front-engine and rear-engine and rear-engine cars. 4. Here's an interesting item from a U.S. journals, quoted by the Ontario Safety League: Prophecy -- Over 50 years ago, then President, Taft, ap- | pointed five men to a research committee, asking them to visu- | alize goals of the Americans of 1962. Their visualizations were: a satellite that would carry a man around the world in orbit; a military airplane capable of going 1,400 mph; an automobile capable of travelling at 150 mph; a network of paved roads which ; would permit a driver to go | from New York to Los Angeles | unimpeded; and the teaching |of drivers to drive automobiles jin a safe manner. We have them all but the last. 5. City traffic accidents would be reduced, says the Ontario Safety League, if all motorists followed this simple rule of good driving: when driving through an intersection, take your foot off the accelerator and rest it lightly on the brake.
