He is an espenially loving and 'sensitive child. How should I prepare him for his hospital stay? Must I lie, or be perfectly honest when he asks if it will hurt? So far we have tried to jteach him that the best things jare not always the most pleas- j ant. Should one parent or the other be with him constantly, or would we be more in the way |than helpful? | The hospital is 25 miles from }our home. Grandma said she'd |help-us if needed, but we don't |want our boy to be so babied |that he will think this is some- | thing to be terribly upset about. | |--R. G. | I wish more people would ask | themselves such good questions | before a child goes to the hos- ipital for the first time. | One thing is certain: Don't lie jto a child! Jf he asks whether lit will hurt, the true answer is that things will be a little un- | comfortable, but won't be what you can really call hurting. It }might help if you can think of | something that worried him in ber how worried you were when you had your first haircut? And jthen you found it wasn't any- thing to be afraid of." At six, he can understand if }you tell him--and this is quite true--that thousands of chil- | dren, many much younger, have had similar tests. If they can do it, so can he | Most. six-year-olds will re- spond to an appeal to pride: {That you want him to act like ) | the past, like, "can you remem-| 'Jed ja big boy, because you know he can do it. One thing I certainly would do: Take along some toy or trinket. of which he is fond or proud. It may be a stuffed ani- jmal, a picture book, a toy pis- jtol, or a cowboy hat. It doesn't ;matter much what, so long as |he likes it very much. It's something for him to hang onto | when he feels scared or lonely-- jnot a lot of toys,-but one fa- vorite article. I will leave it to the doctors | to decide whether it will be bet- ter for you to stay with him jall the time, or whether' they'd rather you did not. Usually the answer will be that it is for you to get the little fellow set- jtled in the hospital, and used Now the only way to buy WRIGLEY'S SPEARMINT ..popular, modern dime pack CHEWING GUM Ree ics AM... catty $ & He x You get more to enjoy in the convenient Dime Pack of Wrigley's Spearmint... more of thet fresh flevour and lively taste! In 'tournament circles you hear a lot of stories told by ex- perts about their strange ex- periences against the so-called Little Old Ladies: They are the composite, largely -- fictional characters who play in bridge tournaments and sometimes manage, in their own sweet way, to wreak havoc against the masters, | One of the best of these stor- ies goes back to the time years ago when the two Little Old Ladies, bubbling with excite- ment, sat down to play against a couple of celebrated life mas- ters in a national pair cham- pionship. It was not really surprising that, as soon as the bidding was over, Little Old Lady No. 2 (East) led the queen of dia- monds out of turn. The tournament director was called and he ruled correctly that South could cali the lead of any suit (that was the rule in those days) or treat the dia- mond queen as an exposed card. South thereupon asked for a club lead from West, but Little Old Lady No. 1, somewhat em- barrassed, stated that she didn't have a club to lead Having se- lected his penalty, even though West could not comply, declar- er had no additional rights, and Little Old Lady No. 1 was told jthat she could now make any lead she wanted to. She shrewdly opened a' low diamond, knowing that her part- ner had the queen. East won the trick with the jack -- the queen was back in her hand -- and returned a club, the suit West had said she had none of. West ruffed and led another low diamond, which East took with the queen. Another club ruff resulted in South's going down one, much to his dismay. All over the room everybody was making either four or five spades, while our expert South was the only declarer to be de- feated in four spades, The moral of the story is not entirely clear, but South is much more careful these days when he plays against Little Old Ladies, SALLY'S SALLIES |to it--and then absent yourself. Your presence most likely would scare him, by implying \that it's so important you have jto be with him during the ac- jtual examination. | Do things matter-of-factly, If jyou try too hard to reassure him, he may get upset. If you take the experience calmly, he | will. | Remember also that wards in |most hospitals are geared to make a child's stay pleasant, I? he can be out of bed, there of- ten is a playroom or game room. Nurses and aides try to jkeep a little patient occupied. And quite often he finds a new friend as a room mate. | Dear Dr. Molner: I am a }man, 35, with a borderline her- jnia. Is it all right for me to | bowl?--L. S. I see no objection. However, if that, or any type of exercise, jcauses the hernia to enlarge |temporarily, or causes any dis- |comfort in the groin, be wary. | The greatest danger for a her- nia of this kind occurs from lifting or straining that causes a marked increase in pressure inside the abdomen. This does not occur from bowling. | tehninanemntatipatinianenene sane
