12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, Mey 27, 1998 | THOMPSON ALSO sports MENU OLA Suspends Gaels Stinson By Geo. H, Campbell Associate Sports Laitor GEORGE DUDDIN, president of the Ontario Lacrosse Association, and his executive committee, handed out a total of 11 suspensions earlier this week, four of which were shared equally by two players from Mimico Mounties and two of the Supertests of St, Catharines, Continuing the com- mendable policy of strict discipline, to make sure that the game is kept under control, and so sustain the popularity regained by lacrosse in recent years, four more suspensions were announced today, aftermath of the Oshawa Hunts- ville skirmish here last Monday night, Don Stinson, high- scoring defence star of the Green Gaels, was suspended for six games -- he had drawn two minors, a major and game misconduct, when he crashed the Huntsville goalie Guy Lassiter, into the boards, in the final minute of play, The Thompson brothers were ejected from the game for their rough-play feuding. Brian Thompson of Green Gaels drew a two-game suspension, while brother Ken of Huntsville got the same sentence, as did his teammate, Larry treland, also for rough play. This probably concludes the affair, although not for certain, since Fred Whalley, manager of the Oshawa club and himself a member of the OLA executive, says he plans to appeal Stinson's six-game term, which starts to- night, when Gaels play in Brampton slipped of en Softball to he MINOR SOFTBALL, (Bantam and Midget boys) to a low ebb, here last year, with the fewest number tries in the 18-year history of the Oshawa Minor Association. Barly this spring, there still appeared little or no interest among the boys of this level, or perhaps more accurately, among the various Neighborhood Parks However, the last few days have produced several inquiries so the full executive of the Oshawa Minor Softball Associa tion held a meeting last night and voted to operate the Kiwanis Bantam league this summer, if) sufficient Park teams are interested, and a Midget league also similar basis. President 'Joe' Victor has called a meeting for Tues day evening, 7:30 o'clock, at Simcoe Hall, Since it is getting late in the season, it is urged that any Park team interested in entering either league, have an authorized representative on hand, prepared to state his Park's definite intentions It is hoped there will he as litfle delay as possible in final izing the entries and getting a schedule underway on including a new one, highlighted Night' of the Oshawa Minor Hockey Association, annual banquet and presentation event of this city's fine age-limit hockey organization, There are trophies for the leading scorers in each of the three leagues bantam, midget and juvenile most outstanding player awards in each circuit; most sportsmanlike player, out standing goalie, outstanding defenceman, in the entire or ganization, The newest trophy is The Vie Burr Memorial Trophy, in memory of one of Oshawa's finest homebrew goalies of all time, a man who afler concluding his own playing career, remained vigorously active as a team man ager, coach and for a long term, president of the Oshawa MHA, This new award gent to the most outstanding player in the 'Novice' division, It was a night of continual "con gratulations" and of these, none was more deserved than those extended to "Rill" Kurelo, popular manager of the Oshawa Civic Auditorium, We might add that the execulive of the OMHA also rates our personal congratulations for their excellent choice, "Rill' received The Mel Bradley Memorial Trophy for "outstanding contribution of service to minor hockey in Oshawa", He certainly qualifies! In his youth, Rill was one of "Pat" Patterson's 'Rinky-Dinks" from 'The Dale' (Cedardale, this is) and he became inter ested in Oshawa's minor hockey set-up al an early age, He served as its President through some of the arduous years of the early 50's, when operating the OMHA was a real chore they played their games in Port Perry and the odd one in Rowmanville but they kept right on operating, until the Children's Arena was erected, Dedicated workers in minor sport are not nearly plentiful enough and this city and particularly minor hockey, has been fortunate to have Bill' Kurelo as a sports-minded and community-conscious citizen, Civil Service League Plays 2] - Game Schedule woTeE r i ta tee s che iy i y ye Rundies DeHarts TROPHIES GALORE, the "Hail The Champions Rexeo vs All othe west and ea at Radin Park and at Thorn as, at Thornte Good Boys Nip Radio Club 12-11 Good Roys CKLB Softhall day Park Hoa t the loser ngs ¥ 5 mnings, + Furniture nosed 12-11 n their UAW League Thurs afternoon Lakeview at Radin and 2 Thornton's out 3 Ontaris action Slee Foieys At Yshawa and Hette vs 9 nies went the but he he -th distance for vad two bad and = =osixth couple in Aird E ak Rexcn Ru Hefter Good Rovs the couple then scored a second but 'in the of singles, triple and Garne more The fifth un hame four for a f-1 lead added one in the then staged a five n the th Winner and parade hits being the climax t W Norris T Woods n nin on five Garnet double th DeGra Faraghe ral N and each had a pair of safeties for Good -- Roys + Re dies Faragher 'sta CKLB nur the the fourth with a double singles a walk com.
