14 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, bay 27, 1966 MINOR HOCKEY AWARD WINNERS Among players honored by Oshawa Minor Hockey As- sociation officials at annual __ hockey _champions -- banquet Vancouver Gal Could were, left to right, Dave Bracken, most sportsman- like midget, Dennis Hercia, __ most }_sportsmaniike juven- ile, David McKee, outsta ing pee wee player, Charlies Watson, sportsmanlike bantam m Replace Petra Burka By MARILYN ARGUE Canadian Press Staff Writer Fetra Burka's decision to turn professional is a setback to Canada's hopes of regain- ing prominence in world fig- ure-skating in the immediate future, But if young Karen Magnus- gen of Vancouver develops as expected, it shouldn't be many years before this coun- try has another hope for a world title, Karen, who started to skate because she wanted to be a snowflake in a carnival chorus and realized that ambition at the age of seven, was second to Miss Burka this year in the free-skating part of the Cana- dian senior ladies' champion- ships. The 13-year-old was fifth in the important schoo) figures but that was largely because she had graduated to senior ranks only five months earlier and had 18 new figures to master in that time. Karen's over-all rating was fourth and as a result she didn't get to the world cham- pionships where Miss Burka, the Canadian and North American titleholder, lost her world crown, Karen now has her sights set on competing in the 1967 world championships in Aus- tria and. the Winter Olympics in France in 1968, Miss Bur- ka's abdication virtually as- sures Miss Magnussen of fin- ishing in the top three in Canadian competition and a place on the national team, STUDIES BALLET Karen is in Grade 8 at Seton Academy, a private school for girls, Her day in class doesn't begin until 10:30 a.m. because she polished off her math course last summer the Same time as she skating school and passed her gold free-skating test She's a Beatle fan but says she can't seem to stretch her allowance to buy their rec- ords, There isn't that much time or energy left for doing the frug or the monkey any- way, 6:30 to 10:30 a.m p.m Saturday is her day off--she takes some ballet classes and is on the ice for only an hour at and 3 to 6 after dinner--but Sunday she | puts in another five hours at the rink with coach Linda Brauckmann attended: | what with skating from | attractive, with short fair hair, large blue eyes and a shy, dimpled smile. She is five-foot-one and weighs only 98 pounds but seems to have considerable endurance and nerves of steel, 'I. get nervous before I go on the ice but you can't think of it too much beforehand or you go to pleces,"' she says. "Once I start to skate it's all right." HAD WRONG RECORD Usually, that is, Last year at the British Columbia cham- plonships someone put the wrong side of her free-skating record on and she went through 24% minutes of her routine before she noticed, "Then it comes to a cut where I have something extra added, and of course it wasn't there. I stopped and told the referee and he checked and everything, and they let me skate it over." After all that extra skating and mental brouhaha, she won the class, | The day before, she had fal- len against the boards warm- ing up for the school figures and split her lip. "They just sort of cleaned it up and I went on"--and won the school figures, Karen likes animals and has thoughts of becoming a veterinarian -- as did three- time champion Suzanne Mor- row Francis of Toronto--but she has put that aside to con- Centrate on Shating. She also started to ski at 2% | Karen {1s but doesn't anymore--it's dangerous and you use differ- ent muscles," Karen's sisters, Lori 10, and Judy Lynn, 8 every size and BE GETTING THE DEAL O and Ann, confidence from your Chev- Olds dealer. | 65 Oldsmobiles-- EVERYTHING FROM SMOOTH OLDS '98s TO THE POCKET-SIZED OLDS F-85s.
