THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, May 31, 1966 3A TROOPING OF COLORS FREEDOM OF CITY Pomp And Tradition Promineni in Centennial On September 14 this year the Ontario Regiment will be 100 years old. And this being Centennial Year the Regiment has gone to a great deal of trouble to re- vive memories of the old pomp and tradition that used to sur- round military life. As Capt. Nick Hall, Regiment spokesman explained, "We are going to observe the old army traditions that are fast dying." Highlights of the Regiment's well planned celebrations is just a week away. On June 5 the Regiment will hold Trooping The Color para This will be staged on the ample de tarmac of the General Mo- south plant parking lot, REHEARSAL Rehearsals for this parade have been underway for several weeks. For the parade everything must be perfect. A solitary slip- up and the effect is ruined. Guest of honor at the parade will be Lt,-Governor Earl Rowe. He will inspect the troops and take the salute at the march past of men and tanks. ; He will be accompanied on the day by Major General F. F. Worthington, a great friend of the Regiment and Colonel Com- mandant of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. The last time the Ontario Regiment Trooped the Color was on May 15, 1940, prior to its moving to Camp Borden and overseas on active service. At that time the colors were stored in the Chancel of St. George's Church, Oshawa, until the Regiment's return in 1945. This coming Saturday will also be one of tne last occa- sions the Regimenta! Colors will be on display. The Colors are due for retire- ment ealry next year. [n their place the Regiment is to receive a single guidon, emblazoned with the battle honors of World Wars One and Two. 200 ON PARADE In all this Saturday, some 200 men of the Ontario Regiment will be on parade. Alongside them will be the veterans of the Ontario Regiment Associa- tion. n In smart blue blazers, gray trousers and Regimental beret the veterans will play an im- portant part in the ceremony. A special feature of the day will be the appearance of mem- bers of the old Fort Henry Guard. They are being brought down from Kingsion especially for the occasion. It is hoped that the Guard will be able to put on a special dis- play for the huge crowds that are expected te witness the Trooping ceremony Two troops of tanks will take part in the march. As they pass the saluting base guns will be dipped in salute io the Gover- nor. Work on polishing and paint- ing the tanks has been under- way for several weeks. These too, must be in spotless condi- tion for the parade Lt. Governor Rowe is to be the guest of Col. R. 8. McLaugh- lin. for the day. He will be staying at Col. McLaughlin's Parkwood home. He will arrive at the cere- mony in an open landau accom- panied on either side by mem- bers of the Governor General's Horse Guard. The Regiment is hoping that as many people as possible will turn out to watch the ceremony.
