It leather belt, (CP Photo) Getting Along Together : Goal Of YMHA Program By WALTER KREVENCHUK (CP) The Young Men's Hebrew Asso- ciation Community Centre thinks small to achieve youth | program objectives. "The tools that we have to work with are the small group and the program that the small group plans and imple- ments," says associate pro- gram director Arnold Cohen. "By participating with the amall group the member de- velops relationships with other members of that group by sharing equipment, by planning of programs, through joint decisions that are made. By participation in similar experiences there de- velops the ability and skill of getting along with others. "Through this kind of pro- gram we expose the individ. | ual to as large a scope and experience as possible, Mr. Cohen says it is only through offering as wide an experience as possible that you attract as large a mem- bership as possible -- one of the objectives of the Commu. nity Centre. The Winnipeg centre has de- veloped programs that can service youth in an all-around capacity, DUAL APPROACH "In an informal educational setting of small groups, we are able to perpetuate a sense of well-being psychologically and physically so 'that there can be a healthy adjustment and positive approach to the world in which the youth lives and into the world in which he will participate as a re- sponsible and _ contributing Jewish adult citizen." Association program direc- tor Les Marks refers to the centre's program involving 1,800 youngsters ranging in age from nine to 16 as "'pre- ventive social medicine." "It is an attempt to help people, through the way in which they use their leisure time, to maintain or develop themselves as individuals who can live satisfying lives with themselves and others." Mr. Marks says the centre offers two basic kinds of serv- ice to youth aimed at helping them help themselves. Athletic activities of all kinds--should.._help..tham__ac- quire a feeling of physical fit- ness. Professionally - trained group workers plan programs to stimulate guided use of leisure time as a result of which youngsters learn to get along better in their social en- vironment--the world of other people, their values, needs and interests. PARTICIPATION IS KEY The first problem the cen- tre staff recognizes is that to do anything with a youngster he must take part. "Activities must be planned so that participating is more exciting and appealing than watching television, reading comics or spending money for expensive entertainment," Juvenile boys make ham- pers for the Jewish child and family service; 25 groups of 11 and 12-year-old boys and girls take part in an oratori- cal contest --with freedom bondage as the theme. Mr. Marks lists these ad- vantages of small groups: A child learns to share equip: ment and supplies and care for equipment --not because there isn't enough for every- one to have their own but be- cause in practical and sym- bolic terms living is a matter of sharing, caring, giving and taking, both physically and emotionally A child' learns that be ing good doesn't. necessarily mean being best--that being a scholar is as valuable as being an athlete or a folk dancer and that all people with all skills have something to contribute to each other, WINNIPEG Hospital.
