6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, July 5, 1966 SPORTS BEAT By ERIC WESSLBY Times Sports Editor eMSHAWA GREEN GAELS continued to make life mis- erable for everyone in the Ontario Lacrosse Association's junior '"'A" series at the Civic Auditorium last night, romping to an easy 24-5 victory over Brampton Arm- strongs. Seven-gogi.peryformances by Brian Thompson and Ross Jones paved the way for Gaels and it makes you wonder just who is going to stop this current club. It cer- tainly looks as if none of the clubs in this league is capable of beating coach Jim Bishop's crew. There was some talk earlier. that Toronto Township, with a big jump in condi- tion, could do the job but it was found wanting when put to the test. GAELS DON'T HAVE a game until next Monday, _.whan_St... Catharines. is here,. but,..unlike..the--majerity--of teams, they won't be idle. Bishop will have them working out steadily, and it's amazing how he can keep the team "up", game after game. You'd expect them to get stale with very few tough games, but such is not the case. While Gaels appear a sure thing for first place, that's an inter- esting battle going on for fourth, with five clubs in the running, St.. Catharines, Hastings, Huntsville, Brampton and Long Branch. WHILE GAYLORD POWLESS continues to make a shambles of the scoring race, along with Ross Jones, To- ronto Township is stirring up a bit of. a storm over the assists being doled out to Jim Paterson in Hastings. The Township squad claims it can prove that in one game, Paterson scored two goals and picked up two assists but that the official score sheet showed two goals and five assists when it reached OLA headquarters. There are some who might think Powless is the recipient of more than his share of assists, but Gaylord enjoyed his most productive assist-night this year away from home. Assists are a part of the game, as they are of hockey, and there'll always be the cry of cheap assists whenever scor- ing titles are at stake. I doubt whether the good players get any more assists than they earn, They probably lose just as many on poor shooting by teammates on set-ups. Jones, Thompson Shine In Convincing Victory JUST TALKING -- Gaylord now has 132 points, and. 84 é while league goal scoring lead- 'er Ross Jones has 62 goals and lin the first frame and another|own end and were playing a lin the third. Acadian Cleaners were eliminated in the first round, they went down fighting before the eventual. tourney cham- pions, North Toronto Richardsons. And two fellows familiar to hockey fans played a big part in Richardsons' win, first baseman Rocky Farr and third baseman Barry Wilkins. Farr, who played goal with London Na- tionals in the OHA Junior '"'A" series last winter, had to be the outstanding performer in the tournament. He was on base nearly every time you looked and played well in the field. Wilkins, who was with Generals last winter, also hit well, contributing a two-run homer in the final game, a 14-3 win over Thorold, and fielding flawlessly in the iast game. $$ ACADIAN CLEANERS HEAD for Little Britain again Wednesday, this time for a playoff game against Little Britain Pirates for the right to challenge for a berth in the CIVIL SERVICE LEAGUE | box Canadian junior playoffs at Newfoundland later this | There were two fights, Sn ee tine se' | NO-Hit, No-Run Tilt Local 22 Only One 'Out' Away Wins Pennant Winner of the game tomorrow night faces a western On- tario team for the right to travel to Montreal next week.
