§ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, July 6, 1966 PM Urges Studies In All Areas OTTAWA (CP)--The fledgling science Council of Canada got off the ground Tuesday With a plea by Prime Minister Pearson to explore not only the entire field of science and technology but also the boundaries be- tween science and the humani- ties. Important borderline areas be- tween scientific disciplines and between science and the human- ities may be overlooked in- our complex society, he told the in- augural meeting of the 28-mem- ber g@dvisory council. "TI feel very keenly that the study of science's relationship to society should by no means be the sole province of philosophers and political scientists." | Mr. Pearson opened the coun- cil's first meeting with a brief speech outlining some of its re- sponsibilities and a few specific problems which already have been referred to the new organ- ization. These included determining the proper balance in spending between research and develop- ment in government laborator- jes and in industry, and how to adjust the balance to: bring it to the proper level. CHECK METHODS The council also was asked to investigate whether current gov- ernment programs of tax incen- tives and public investment are the best means of stimulating scientific activity in Canada, or whether more effective methods are being overlooked. The questions need careful and delicate consideration, he added, and '"'we refer them to you in the full knowledge that the answers will not come quickly or easily."
