THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, July 8, 1966 Injuries Sideline Champions By LASZLO BASTYOVANSZKY WINNIPEG (CP) -- Canada's two top gymnasts will watch from the sidelines as their 'ti- tles go up for grabs at the Ca- nadian gymnastics champion- ships which open here Friday. The two-day event, winding up with the selection of six men and six women to represent ~-Ganada-at-the-world- champion- ships in Dortmund, Germany, Sept. 20-25, has attracted 82 competitors from seven prov- inces and three U.S. states. But the two 1965 champions-- Gail Daley of Saskatoon and Gilbert Larose of Montreal--will not be able to defend their titles, won. in Saskatoon, because of injuries. Miss Daley, 20, four-time win- ner of Canadian senior women's championships since 1962, has a cast on her right leg following a June 13 knee operation to cor- rect an injury.' Larose is limp- ing from a severed tendon in his right foot. EXERCISES IN WATER Larose, 24, who competes for and coaches Immaculate Con- ception Club in Montreal, has been working out in water to get his ankle back in condition. "The doctor says it will take another two weeks before my leg will be strong enough for competition, but in the mean- time I can't defend my title, as much as I'd like to," Larose said in an interview Wednesday. Gymnastics coach Herb Vogel of Southern Illinois University, where Gail attends school, says the silver medal winner of the 1963 Pan-American Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil, will be out of action at least six months. Miss Daley will definitely not be on the Canadian team but Larose could be named by the selection committee. Irene Howarth, 20, of Saska- toon, who goes to school with Daley, is favored to take the senior women's title. Among her achievements is the 1965 NCAA championship in the U.S. and a second-place finish be- hind Miss Daley last year. ALSO SEEKS TITLE Susan McDonnell, 18, of Scar- borough, Ont., another con- tender for the title, finished third in the Canadian women's and the North American open championships in 1965. In the senior men's class, for- mer Canadian and North Amer- fcan champion Willy Weiler of Chilliwack, B.C., and Roger Dion of Montreal will vie for Larose's title. Weiler, 30, a physical training instructor and a sergeant in the Canadian Army, has won 113 medals since he came to Can- ada in 1957. Born in Rastatt, Germany, the veteran of sev- eral international events has won eight medals, including three gold, at the 1963 Pan-Am Games. Dion, whose strong showing in vault events earned him third- American championships, ended up in second place behind La- 'rose in Saskatoon a year ago. In the junior men's class, 1965 all-round champion Sidney Jen- sen has entered, while in junior women's competition, Glenna Sebestyen, 14, of Saskatoon, will try to retain the title she won in 1962, 1964 and 1965.
