(CP Photo) Threat Closes Chicago Piers CHICAGO (AP)--The threat of a seiche in Lake Michigan closed Chicago beaches and piers for several hours Monday. The water disturbance alter- nately lowered the lake level as much as six feet and then forced it three feet above nor- mal. Such fluctuations, the weather bureau said, can be preliminary to a seiche. A seiche is a sudden rise of water along the shore line ap- parently caused by barometric essure variations over the in- nd body. Seiches took eight lives in Chicago in June, 1954, as five- foot flat swells a mile wide swept ashore after a storm, in- undating piers and carrying fishermen into the water. Seiches usually follow violent storms which move across Lake Michigan. A weather bureau meteorologist likened them to the sloshing of water from side to side of a large bowl.
