ps i ds ae ne ee 6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturdey, July 16, 1966 SPORTS BEAT By ERIC WESSLBY 'Times Sports Editor Congratulations from the Times sports staff to Pam Miller on her triumph yesterday in the Ontario Ladies' Open golf championship. It takes a good golfer to beat Marlene Stewart Streit, and victory capped a strenuous week for the pride of the Oshawa Golf Club. The 18-year- old faced a formidable list of opponents on her march to the title. Playing an important part in Miss Miller's suc- cess was the help she received from caddy Jim Cummings, who helped settle her down during the--more--hectic moments, Sunday's exhibition lacrosse game at Whitby Arena should be an interesting one. In case you came in late, it's the annual Ontario Lacrosse Association's Junior "A" League all-star contest, pitting the all-stars against the league leading Oshawa Green Gaels. Game time, by the way, is 7.30 p.m. and it should attract a large turnout from the district, especially from fans who have to see to believe. See to believe what? Well, if there is a better centre in lacrosse circles than the Gaels' Gaylord Powless, I, for one, will have to be convinced. Sure, Graeme Gair is a good player. But, in a crucial game at Mimico earlier this season, Mimico couldn't gain contro] of the ball for the first eight minutes, mainly because Powless took possession of the ball on every face-off against Gair. IN A SCORING WAY, there's just no comparing the two. Powless is the runaway leader. Gair: He's 60 points behind. There must have been some sheepish looks at practice sessions this week when the so-called lacrosse authorities had their selections aired. What man in his right mind can overlook a player who has scored more goals than anyone in the league? Ross Jones' 71 goals is by far the greatest total in the league, and is also greater than the total number of points scored by all but five players, three of whom play for Gaels. Defensively, I don't think Jim Higgs rates more than third but the experts, this time it's the coaches and man- agers, don't even give him fourth billing. Joe Hoare of Toronto Township and Bill Manley of Mimico are worthy of all-star mention but so is Higgs. EVERY YEAR, when press, radio and television people get around to selecting all-star teams, there is a great hue and cry from coaches and managers. But I doubt whether any group of newspaper men ever staged such a gang-up on one team as the coaches and managers perpetrated on Gaels. If anyone had told you last week that Powless wouldn't be on the first all-star team you'd probably have been willing to bet a-week's, nay, a month's wages, against such a thing happening. It just goes to show you, truth is stranger than fiction. Anyway, don't forget the game, starting at 7.30 p.m. And remember, Hastings Legionnaires ate In Oshawa Monday for a tilt with the Gaels THIS HAS BEEN the week for surprises. How about those Argonauts? True, it's still too early to tell just what coach Bob Shaw has available, but at least the Toronto fans will have something to talk about for a while. Off Thurs- day's performance against Hamilton Tiger-Cats, quarter- back Wally Gabler should do all right. He took a solid thump from big John Barrow early in the second half, but it didn't stop him from grabbing the ball two plays later and picking up valuable yardage. And how many of the Argos can remember the last time they received a stand- ing evation from Toronto fans at half-time? Shaw certainly had no complaints with a. couple of his newcomers. Pete Manning and Al Ecuyer did everything expected of them. Manning, relegated to a defensive roll with Calgary Stampeders last year by the presence of speedster Frank Budd and Herman Harrison, can still make the amazing catch, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him catch one while standing on his head one day. Ecuyer was strong defensively and this is one department where most games are won. TORONTO FANS, who have had little to chortle over in recent years whenever Argos tackled the Tiger-Cats, were certainly giving the Hamilton rooters a rough time Thursday. However, it's still a long time before the boys get around to playing in earnest and, as Ti-Cats proved in the last half, they are still the defending Grey Cup cham- pions and the team to beat. Just how Gabler will stand up trying to throw passes past. Garney Henley and Don Sutherin once the season starts is anyone's guess. There were times Thursday, though, when he resembled Sas- katchewan"s Ron Lancaster, and quite often we were wait- inz for him to start waving his Receivers down field while evading tacklers. I'd say Shaw's going to have the fans with him more this season than in the past two, He proved in Saskatchewan he could field a pleasing team. He made the Roughrider fans, and they can be just as tough on a coach as any Toronto supporter. The Beast heaved Johnny Powers out of the ring and then continued to kick him back. out time Powers attempted back through the This went on until referee Zvonkin got tired of it all and disqualified The Beast, award ing the decision to Powers. But it didn't end there Powers suffered a cut on the face and another at the hair line and when he brushed what he thought was sweat, off him- self and then looked at his hand -- he suddenly screamed "That's blood that's my blood"' and the action quickened. The irate Powers bullied his way into action, clobbered The Beast but also, he took a few shots at Zvonkin, who was trying to insist the bout was all over Finally, Zvonkin, now one of two Powers' victims, lost his| temper too and le switched the decision and awarded the. bout to The Beast.
