MOLNER, M.D. Dear Dr. Molner: What are;husks of grain, the outer cov- lering of kernels of corn, whole are they used?--R, G. |wheat, and so on, Low residue foods are those} which are largely absorbed by| the intestines, with little left) over to be expelled by the! bowel, What is left over is} called residue, or bulk, or roughage or ash. (There are} minor distinctions between} some of these terms, but in all| cases they are "what's left! over."') | A certain amount of bulk is good for a normal digestive sys-} tem. It gives the colon some-| thing to work on--for the bowel! does not tend to discharge! waste matter until enough ac-| cumulates to trigger the' con-| traction which causes a move-| ment. This is something too often forgotten by people who think they are constipated. For them, adding foods with more residue speeds up the time in which the bowel accumulates enough to make a movement. For some folks, artificial bulk- producers (agar and similar products) are useful At the other extreme, there are people who should keep bowel activity or intestinal irri- tation at a minimum. People with ulcers, or diarrhea associ- ated with colitis, are principal examples of those who may re- quire low-residue diets Foods with the lowest residue are such items as refined flour, starch, pure fats, sugar, hard- boiled egg, meat, liver, rice, cottage cheese, gelatin, strained} fruit and v table juices: Vegetables and fruits in gen- eral are relatively high in resi- due. The vegetable fibres are) cellulose, which is indigestible. | The same is true of husks--the! \ Thus, straining out such fi- bres or husks reduces the amount of indigestible residue. In addition, cooking and strain- ing softens the residue of many vegetables which is why vegeta- ble puree is low in residue even though the original vegetables may have been quite high in this respect. Dear Dr. Molner: The son of a friend is dating a girl whose family I know. I am one of the few who know that the girl's parents are first cousins, a se- eret I have kept for years. Should these young people be told of the relationship of the girl's parents? Should I tell the boy's parents and let them take it from there?--Mrs. S. A. Marriage of first cousins can, at times, result in defective children. This occurs if similar faults are inherited from both parents. That is why marriages of first cousins is discouraged, sometimes prohibted by law. However, there may also be no overlap of faulty genes, in which case the children are normal and, indeed, sometimes superior, since they may inherit favorable traits from both sides. Since the girl in this case is healthy, there is no reason for you to bring up the relationship of her parents, and no reason why the girl shouldn't marry-- so long as she doesn't marry a cousin. Say nothing at all about it, ever Dear Dr. Molner: If, in your opinion, it is possible to drink too much coffee, where would you draw the line, in cups per THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, July 18, 1966 2] BRIDGE By 8. JAY BECKER (Top record-holder im Mesters' Individvel Chomplonship Pley) FAMOUS HANDS Wa. Analae we woeawns Both sides vulnerable, EAST @AQ942 9Q97 91043 o7 @A6 HAi0762 303 SOUTH Opening lead -- three of spades, f The biggest swing of the match between Italy and the United States in 1962 occurred jin this hand where the Ameri- can team gained 1,640 points in one fell swoop, At the first table, with Italy North-South, the bidding went as shown, South should have made five diamonds but went down' one, West led a spade, Declarer ruffed and led the queen of clubs, discarding a spade when East followed low. West took the ace and returned a trump. East won with the ace and played back a trump, taken in dummy. Declarer ruffed a club, ruffed a spade, then cashed the king of clubs, discarding a spade, and ruffed another club. After play- ing two more rounds of trumps, South led a heart to the king and another one back towards his hand, But instead of finessing the jack, he went up with the ace, chiefly because West had been forced to discard a heart and might well have blanked the queen, As a result, South went down one for a loss of 100 points, The bidding and play went very differently at the second table. With an American pair al North-South, the bidding went; 'West North East South! Poss Pass 16 26, 4@ %@ Passe Pass Dble The leap to six diamonds, though unusual, gave North double action, He thought there was a chance of making six diamonds, which was certainly a good enough reason to bid it, and he also thought that. his hurry - * tactics might well pressure the Italians into make ing a wrong decision over his leap to six. The bid worked out well when declarer proceeded to make the hand. He ruffed the spade lead in dummy and then ruffed the king of clubs after East had fol- lowed low. Declarer continued to crossruff, and, with the aid of a heart finesse, eventually wound up making twelve tricks for a score of 1,540 points. SALLY'S SALLIES day, between enough and too much?--C, M. C, If you really expect me to give you such a specific figure, you are dreaming! Tolerance to coffee and to many other things varies so much that what is too much for one person wouldn't matter at all to another, Just one cup can bother some individuals; others drink a dozen cups or more a day with- out visible harm, For most of us, two or three cups a day is a resonable amount. The ques- tion isn't how much is too much. The question is how much causes any symptoms for ou. Dear Dr. Molner: Could you check an article in the AMA Journal on diverticulitis and let me know when is the best time to take barium sulphate?--Mrs. A. B. It has often been noted that patients having irritation from diverticulosis (or diverticulitis) noticed relief after having ba- rium for x-ray purposes. The author of the article you cite reasoned that small doses, of barium might therefore be soothing when a "'divertic" be- comes irritated or inflamed. Trying it out, he found that a tablespoon of barium sulphate in a half glass of water or milk, taken three or four times a week, did in fact lessen the discomfort. This does not mean that ev- eryone with diverticulosis of the colon should take barium, The majority have no discomfort, The barium does not cure nor alter the condition basically, but is helpful in lessening irritation when it occurs. 2k PEO,
