TIMES, Wednesday, Auguet 17, 1966 iSPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell Associate Sports Editor GREEN GAELS roared back into their top form and outstanding contention for a berth in the OLA Junior 'A' finals, when they walloped Toronto Township PCO's 18-2, last night, in Port Credit. Third game of this 4-out-of-7 series goes here tonight, at the Civic Auditorium, It would appear that the Toronto Township boys "shot their bolt' in that great stand they made here Monday night in the first twe periods, Unless they can pull off a major upset, winning on the Oshawa floor tonight, this series will probably only Jast the minimum of four games. Meanwhile, Brooklin Redmen clambered back into contention in the Senior 'A' playoffs, when they came from behind a 3-1 deficit to even the count at 3-3, at the end of the second period and then went on to defeat Brampton Excelsiors 7-5 last night, That win ties up th semi-final set at two games apiece. They play again to- night, in Port Credit and this will be a great chance for the Redmen to take over the lead and then, if they do, they'll be in a position to wind it up, on their home floor, Friday night. BAD BOYS came up with their best game of the sea- son, last night at Alexandra Park, to blank Gale's Lumber 3-0 and so even up the 'City Championship' semi-final series at one win apiece. Ted Jones was in fine form for the win- ners and issued only six hits, two of these in the ninth, to earn his shutout. He was aided by fine defensive support from his mates. Last night's game was studded with some unfortunate injuries, all in the strictly accidental category. Early in the game, Jim Rowden, Gale's 3rd baseman, was struck by a pitched ball, on the side of the face. He was taken to Oshawa General Hospital for examination and x-ray pictures, since it was feared he had suffered a frac- tured jaw or cheek bone. At the time of writing, no definite word had been received. Reg White, Gale's pitcher, left the game in the 8th inning, when he was badly shaken up, in a collision with teammate Bob Young. The big first baseman and White were both trying to field "Army" Armstrong's bunt, when they bumped and White had to leave the game. In the ninth, Ted Jones was struck by a line-drive, off the bat of Jack McDermaid. He stayed in the game but he'll be less "chipper" today than he was after his fine victory, last night. GALE'S LUMBER and Bad Boy Appliances are expect- ed to play their third and deciding game, one week from tomorrow night. Bad Boys open their OASA playoffs here Saturday night against Whitby and Gale's move into Peter- borougn the same night, to open their OASA Senior "B" playofis. Meanwhile, Scugog Cleaners and Brooklin Con- cretes will play the second game of their semi-final series, here at Alexandra Park, at eight o'clock, Scugogs scored a shutout in the first game of this series, in Brooklin. The Brooklin team will be playing at home tonight, the return game of their OASA second round series, against Bridge- north. Brooklin won the first one handily, 30-0, so not much opposition is expected tonight but they'll have plenty of opposition, when they face the Scugog Cleaners here tomor- row night, at eight o'clock. CAPSULE SPORTS -- Two big games hold the spot- light tonight, both at Alexandra Park. At 6.30 o'clock, Osh- awa Quality Fuel Midgets face Scarborough in the second game of their series, The Oshawa boys lost 10-6 in Scar- borough on Monday night and must win this one tonight, to force a third game RIGHT AFTER the Midget game is over, People's Clothing and Oshawa Jaycees will go at it, in tha second game of their 3-out-of-5 City Championship series for the Juvenile honors. People's won 1-0 in the first game of the series, Monday night,*but it took them 16 in- nings to get the only run of the game ... AJAX MER- CHANTS scored a big win on Monday night, when pitcher Neil Pascoe sprinted home on an error-throw, in the 9th in- ning, to give Ajax a 4-3 win over Markham Aces, in the third and deciding game of their OASA Inter. 'B' series, Ajax now meets Newmarket, with the first game tomorrow night in Ajax, at eight o'clock -- then back to Newmarket, next Tuesday night ... HARMAN PARK, beaten 27-5 in the first game, took a couple of Storie Park Bantam play- ers with them, to Scarborough last night and won the game }-6, It was an automatic default, of course, but a source of great satisfaction to the Harman Park boys to beat the big Scarborough team right on their own diamond... OSHAWA JAYCEES play Odessa, in Kingston, on Saturday afternoon and they are planning to take a bus, There is room for some spectators and anyone interested should contact Ken Brack SKLAR'S FURNITURE were unable to play in Peterborough last night, due to wet grounds, so the second game of their OBA Midget series was postponed until Fri- day evening, in the Liftlock City OSHAWA LEGION minor ball teams are travelling by bus to Maple Leaf Sta- dium tonight, to watch the International League game be- tween Rochester Red Wings and Toronto Leafs and mainly to see Oshawa's Johnny Ryan, playing at third base for To- ronto, The Legion "visit" to Toronto was arranged by To- ronto club director, Frank McCallum of this city. Clayton added five assists to his effort. Jim Higgs, Brian Thompson and Gaylord Powless scored three times for Gaels, with Thompson adding four assists. Dave Keenan scored his first goal in the playoffs to complete Green Gaels' rout. In a "strictly defensive" game, Merv Marshall was a standout. He stopped 26 shots and allowed only two goals. Three of Marshall's stops were made on breakaways. "Their only goals came on two of our mistakes," coach Jim Bishop said after the game. The series is in an odd situ- ation right at the moment, Both teams have won one game, with the third game still having five minutes and three seconds fo go. It was called off on Sun- day night due toa small sized uprising involving the fans in the Port Credit arena attacking a Whitby player in the penalty box. The referees called the game off at this stage with Dixie leading 11-7. The Ontario Lacrosse Asso- ciation has ruled that the re- maining time will be played prior to the start of Thursday night's game in Port Credit. Coach Glen Lotton feels his team is fired up for the game now, especially with the way the fans have treated them, in r \Port Credit and the fine sup- |port they are getting in Whitby. One thing for sure, Steelers are going to have to go out there and play 60 minutes of good |hard lacrosse if they want to \take this Dixie team to camp.
