6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Mondey, August 22, 1966 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H, Campbell Ks ditar . anes at. wocases a Snarte FE © apeoris © THE LAST HURDLE! Oshawa Green Gaels are on their mark and ready for the last heat of the hurdles, between them and the Canadian Minto Cup, Junior lacrosse cham- pionship finals. Right from the time the horn sounded the end of the game, closing off The Minto Cup series here at the. Civic Auditorium last autumn, coach Jim Bishop, his players and every member of the Oshawa Green Gaels Club executive, has had one eye on the 1966 Minto Cup final, in British Columbia, ambitious to achieve what no other team in Canadian Junior lacrosse history has been able @ do -- nameiy win The Minto Cup four seasons in succession and confident that this team could do just that. Prior to setting forth for either New Westminster, Van- couver or Victoria (we haven't heard who is winning out in the Western junior circuit) the Oshawa Green Gaels have one more job ahead of them, they must qualify. All summer long they have indicated that they are the best Junior 'A' lacrosse club in the East -- but they have to prove it once more, in the OLA final series -- against Mimico Mounties-- and that gets underway, here at the Civic Auditorium tonight, at the usual eight-thirty starting time. THE TITLE ROUND, like both the quarter-final and semi-final series, is booked as a 4-out-of-7 set, with the second game to be played in Mimico, on Thursday night, with the third game here in Oshawa, next Monday. Other dates are Wednesday, Aug. 31 in Mimico; 5th game on Friday, Sept. 2, in Oshawa; 6th game, Saturday, Sept. 3, in Mimico and if it goes the limit, the seventh and deciding game is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 5, in Oshawa. With Brampton Excelsiors moving into the Senior 'A' finals, against Peterborough Pepsi's, the OLA is anxious that Junior and Senior dates, at the "western" end, do not over- lap, since Brampton seniors play their home games in Port Credit and would be a counter-attraction to a Junior playoff tilt at Mimico. There could be a little strategy in- volyed also -- both Brampton and Toronto Township PCO's found out that their best game against Green Gaels was the first of the series. Playing night-after-night, or almost that close, they found that Oshawa's sustained speed and pres- sure, supported by superior condition, gave the Gaels a big By DON McKINNON Times Sports Reporter Alex Cowie and Ian Marshall may have been the reason the |Ontario Cup soccer final is go- ing to one more series of home- and - home, total-point games. Both Cowie and Marshall play- ed outstanding defensive soccer and thwarted any attempt of London Marconi to 'score on Oshawa Modern Grill Thistles Saturday at Kinsmen Stadium. But Rocco Cifaldi, London's left fullback, and goalie Raf- faele Pittaro thwarted any at- tempt of Thistles to score and win the Ontario Cup. Ninety minutes of play went by without a goal in the second game of the home - and -home series (total points) between Thistles and Marconi, and at the end of the 90 minutes it had to be decided what to do about. another game. In a strictly defensive soc- cer match, neither team could get the edge it needed to score a goal. Oshawa's outside left, Gus Robertson had _ several good chances but the strong Marconi defense and Pittaro nullified these. Marconi too had their chances but not of the rushing, passing kind. Two penalty kicks were awarded to Marconi. One was blocked by a wall of Thistle players; the other rolled to the goal post but passed to the out- side. Marconi seemed to have the advantage in "out - heading" the Oshawa players as_ they have a taller club than This- tles. |. Oshawa have a few players "on the limp" so they'll not be unhappy with this chance for recovery. Both Gaylord Powless and Ross Jones are doubtful starters tonight, the former recovering from a back injury while Jones is nursing a twisted anke. Dwight Davies' painful groin injury has responded to treatment, so both he and Neil Armstrong, still having knee trouble, are going to play tonight. The word from the "Jiniment room" is that the rest of the Gaels are fit and ready to go-- so, from here in -- It's Go, Gaels Go! and You'll Go West! OUR OTHER TEAMS didn't fare so well, in their la- crosse action, over the weekend, both Brooklin Redmen and Whitby Lasco Steelers suffering elimination. In the Junior 'B' game at Whitby yesterday afternoon, the Steelers were no match for the Dixie-Toronto Township Combines, dropping a 14-6 decision on their home floor, in the sixth game of the series. They've had a good year and made a creditable showing, but we were hoping to see all three local lacrosse squads win championships this season. Brook- lin Redmen had won twice before over Brampton, right in Port Credit, but they just couldn't manage it the third time, losing the seventh and deciding game there Saturday night, 13-5. So it's Brampton or Peterborough, for the OLA Senior 'A' title and a berth in The Mann Cup finals, here in the East and the end of the playoff trail for Brooklin, Eastern Canadian champions in the previous two seasons. Rated as top. power in senior lacrosse, the Redmen need not be un- happy about their showing this season. They had some rough bumps but still went the limit, before bowing out. They'll be back! CAPSULE SPORTS -- Oshawa Hawkeyes dropped their exhibition game in Scarborough, on Saturday morning, 14-1, getting their lone point on a kick, late in the game... NEWMARKET defeated Ajax Merchants 5-1 in their Inter *B' softball opener, Saturday night. . RON TAYLOR'S fine mound performance won for Gale's Lumber in Peter- borough, 2-0, in 11 innings on Saturday night. Taylor just missed a perfect game--on one lone error--he gave up no hits, no walks and no runs. Return game is tomorrow night. . . SKLARS were eliminated by the Peterborough Midgets, in their third game of OBA playdowns, Saturday night in the Liftlock City but Acadian Cleaners kept Oshawa in the OBA picture, eliminating Little Britain in their Junior series, three-straight games. . . OSHAWA THISTLES and London Marconi-Italia played to a thrilling, scoreless draw, here Saturday night at Kinsmen Stadium. A second Ontario Cup soccer final series has been scheduled, again home-and-home, on Sept. 10 in London and back in Oshawa the following Saturday. . STORIE PARK Squirts dropped the third game of their OASA series, right on their own diamond, to the Peterborough lads and out at North Oshawa, our Pee Wee representatives lost to Belleville, in the first game of that OASA round. . . Watters, with two doubles and two singles, led Cleaners at the plate. Brian Boyd had two singles while other hits went to Cookson, Jones, Rod Williams, Fair, Peterson and Godfrey.
