SPORTS BEAT By ERIC WESSLBY Times Sports Editor that the an Major The. OASA that tion games. book states rating, in ho. Congratulations to Jim Bishop, Fred Walley, Frank Wilbur and all the Green Gaels. Last night at Mimico they proved worthy champions, dropping the Mimico Mourties 15-5 to sweep their best-of-seven Ontario junior lacrosse playoffs in a minimum of games. This brings to 34 the number of successive Ontario playoff victories for Gaels, a tremendous record. Now it's off to New West- minster for the defence of the Minto Cup. ONLY SOUR NOTE of the win Wednesday was the necessity of calling the game with four minutes and 23 «seconds of playing time remaining. Victory sort of falls flat on something like that, because there's nothing quite » like that final minute in a championship game. So what if { the outcome wasn't in doubt, the fans still like to have that * opportunity to applaud their team in fitting style. It was « quite a while last night before the fans could get warmed * up to victory. * YOU CAN'T GIVE the Gaels' executive and coaching staff enough credit. Four straight OLA titles is no mean accom- jplishment. And this club did it the hard way, with scoring «leader Gaylord: Powless on the sidelines. This year's club "will never be labelled a "one-man" team. Guys such as *Jim Higgs, Dwight Davies, Neil Armstrong and Joe .Krasnaj were standouts, and also Merv Marshall. Up *front, Fred Greenwood came through with flying colors as replacement for Powless, and his ball ragging during pen- alties was a bonus. A BIG DIFFERENCE in the teams, Mimico and Gaels, had to be the coaching. Mimico coach Ross Bonar made few friends in the series, and his abusive attack on referee Ron Pettibone in the corridor following last night's game should not go unpunished. Officials usually don't mind hearing a losing coach sound off, but when the language is enough to peel the paint off the walls, something should be done. And it's not the first time Bonar has verbally attack- ed an official. The close proximity of the Mimico dressing ftoom to the officials' room leaves the referees at the mercy of the coach until the door is unlocked. GETTING BACK to the game, however, you'd have to give Bishop a pat on the back for 'breaking up a tense situation near the Gaels' bench at the end of the second period. For awhile it had all the makings of a brawl, sim- ilar to the one here Monday, but Bishop's orders sent his players out of the mix-up and order was quickly re- Stored, Once again, well done Gaels, loughby It is the contention of Osh-| with two out; Seugog Cleaners "exhibition'"'| seven. runs in the league and as such, all sched-jon seven hits, all singles.
