+ JQ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Saturday, September 3, 1966 RE RON Iter KEL NAGLE Nagle One Up In World Golf SOUTHPORT, England (AP) Those four-to-one odds the gam- blers put on Bill Casper to win the $200,000 world championship golf tournament looked like a good bet today for those who backed the American. Casper strode into the final round of the 72-hole, medal-play tournament with 216 shots, one behind Kel Nagle of Australia, who was leading the field. Nagle held his lead Friday by shooting a par 73 over tre 7,037 yard Royal Birkdale course. Casper, the U.S. Open cham- pion, fired a four-under-par 69 to leap back into contention, Bert Yancey, of the U,S., who had a 68 Thursday, shot a 76 for 217 which put him two shots off the pace. DEVLIN TIES YANCEY Bruce Devlin of Australia.also had 217, At 218 were Roberto de Vincent of Argentina, Peter Thomson of Australia, Terry Dill of Mule Shot, Tex., and Neil Coles of England. Equalling par of 219 for the| _B4-hole route were Colin John- stone and Barry Coxon of Aus- tralia, and Bob Charles, the left- hander from New Zealand. Only two Canadians of nine were still in contention. Moe Norman, from Gilford, Ont., was in a six-way tie at 225. He shot 77 Friday to go with earlier rounds of 75 and 73. Wilf Homenuik of Winnipeg, the Canadian PGA champion in 1965, shared 229 with nine other players. He had 80 Friday after rounds of 75 and 74. There still are 82 players in the match. In addition to the Canadians there are 44 Ameri- Tages Britons, eight Aus- shia 2f + Africans, four Spaniards, two Japanese, two Irishmen and a New Zea- lander, Argentinian and French- man, Soccer Finals Nearing End WINNIPEG (CP) -- Neil El- lett's goal with seven minutes left to play gave British Colum- bia a 1-1 tie with Ontario and a first-place finish in Group A of the Canadian championship soccer tournament Friday. The draw gave B.C. six points and sent them into a final match today with Quebec, first- place finishers in Group B by virtue of a better goal average over Saskatchewan. In Group B action, Saskatche- wan's 1-0 victory over Quebec wasn't enough to keep the east- erners out. of the final. Sas- katchewan meets Ontario in a playoff match today to decide third and fourth spots. Manitoba and Alberta finished but of the playoff picture Thurs- day night. In previous action B.C. downed Ontario 6-0 and Quebec beat Saskatchewan 5-1 Ontario, "needing a victory against B.C., got a goal from right winger Robert Benedetti in the 27th minute. B.C. attack- ers, led by centre forward Ike McKay and inside forward Rob- ert Goodheart, were stopped cold by a strong defence guided by a standout performance of goalkeeper Art Kushner and centre half Carlo Mauti. TACTICS FAILED Tight defensive tactics by On-| tario in the second frame failed in the 83rd minute when Good- heart passed a free kick to EI- lett, at 22 the oldest member of the B.C, team. Ellett's high booming drive from 40 yards out careened into the top of Kushner's net for the equalizer. In Saskatchewan's victory on a goal from Adolf Traweger, Quebec goalkeeper Peter Greco caught the spotlight. Looking for a 3-0 victory to change the group standings, Saskatchewan pressed with dangerous attacks only to be smothered by alert Greco. Goalkeeper Willie Haunsper- ger in the Saskatchewan net kept his club's chance alive when he saved Danny Sopata's penalty kick in the first half. DRIVER KILLED ELKHART LAKE, Wis.
